Il était une fois, dans un royaume très lointain, un roi et une reine. Le roi était beau et bon. Mais le véritable souverain du royaume était sa femme – la reine.
Once upon a time, in a kingdom very far away, (there was) a king and a queen. The king was handsome and kind. But the real ruler of the kingdom was his wife — the queen.
Avant de devenir reine, elle avait travaillé dans la cuisine du château. Elle était très pauvre. Mais elle était aussi très belle et drôle, et très forte au Scrabble. Alors le roi tomba amoureux d’elle et l’épousa.
Before becoming queen, she had worked in the castle kitchen. She was very poor. But she was also very beautiful and funny, and very good (strong) at Scrabble. So the king fell in love with her and married her.
Le roi aimait beaucoup la reine. Mais la reine avait toujours peur que le roi rencontre une femme plus belle.
The king loved the queen very much. But the queen was always afraid (always had fear) that the king would meet a more beautiful woman.
Heureusement la reine avait un miroir magique. Le miroir voyait tout et savait tout.
Chaque jour la reine se regardait dans le miroir et demandait :
« Miroir, mon beau miroir, dis-moi qui est la plus belle ? »
Fortunately the queen had a magic mirror. The mirror saw everything and knew everything.
Each day the queen looked in the mirror and asked:
“Mirror, my beautiful mirror, tell me, who is the most beautiful?”
* Fun fact: This is not what the mirror says in the Disney version of the tale. Disney's queen says « Miroir magique au mur, qui a beauté parfaite et pure ? » (Magic mirror on the wall, who has perfect and pure beauty?) But ask French speakers what the mirror says, and most will tell you « Miroir, mon beau miroir ... » so that's what we've used here.)
Et le miroir répondait :
« C’est vous, ma reine ! Vous êtes la plus belle femme du monde. »
Et la reine était heureuse.
And the mirror replied:
"It's you, my queen! You are the most beautiful woman in the world."
And the queen was happy.
Mais un jour tout changea. La reine se mit face au miroir et lui posa la question habituelle.
« Miroir, mon beau miroir, dis-moi qui est la plus belle ? »
But one day everything changed. The queen stood in front of the mirror and asked it the usual question:
"Mirror, my beautiful mirror, tell me, who is the most beautiful?"
Et le miroir répondit :
« Vous êtes très belle, ma Reine. Mais la plus belle femme du monde est… Blanche-Neige »
La reine fut choquée.
« Qui est Blanche-Neige ? »
And the mirror replied:
"You are very beautiful, my queen. But the most beautiful woman in the world is... Snow White."
The queen was shocked.
"Who is Snow White?"
« Blanche-Neige travaille dans la cuisine du château. Elle a des cheveux aussi noirs que la nuit, des lèvres aussi rouges que des roses et une peau blanche comme la neige. A huit heures ce matin, elle était un tantinet plus belle que vous. »
"Snow White works in the castle kitchen. She has hair as black as night, lips as red as roses, and skin white as snow. At eight this morning she was a tad more beautiful than you."
« ARRRGGHH ! » hurla la reine. Elle tapa des pieds. Elle se tira les cheveux.
« Je vais tout perdre... »
"ARRRGGHH!!" yelled the queen. She stomped her feet. She pulled her hair. Then she sat down and started to cry.
"I will lose everything!"
La reine avait peur. La peur de la reine rendit son cœur froid et dur.
La reine fit venir un chasseur en qui elle avait confiance.
The queen was afraid. The queen's fear made her heart cold and hard. The queen summoned (made come) a trusted hunter (a hunter whom she trusted).
« Trouve la fille, cette Blanche-Neige », ordonna-t-elle. « Emmène-la loin, très loin. Emmène-la au plus profond des bois. »
Et la reine regarda alors le chasseur au fond des yeux.
« Elle ne doit jamais revenir. »
"Find the girl, this Snow White" she ordered. "Take her far, far away. Take her to the deepest (part of) the woods."
And the queen then looked the hunter in the eyes.
"She must never come back."
