The city mouse

Voici un rat des villes. Il habite dans une grande ville avec de grands immeubles et de nombreux commerces et restaurants. Mais aujourd’hui, il rend visite à son ami, un rat des champs.

« C’est merveilleux ! » pense-t-il. « Je veux vivre en ville moi aussi ! »

That night, the country rat dreams that he lives in the city. He dreams that he eats at fancy restaurants, says fancy things, and buys fancy hats from fancy stores. He dreams about eating Chinese food.
"How wonderful!" he thinks. "I want to live in the city too!"

Le matin suivant le rat des champs accepte d’aller chez le rat des villes. Il fait son sac et suit le rat des villes jusqu’à sa grande maison en ville.

The next morning the country rat agrees to go to the city rat’s place. He makes his bag and follows the city rat back to his big house in the city.

La maison est immense ! Il y a vingt pièces remplies de meubles magnifiques. Le rat des champs est ébahi.
« Laquelle est ma chambre ? » demande-t-il.

The house is enormous! There are twenty rooms full of beautiful furniture. The country rat is amazed.
"Which is my bedroom?" he asks.

« Euh… En fait nous habitons en bas... » dit le rat des villes. Il le conduit par des escaliers jusqu’au sous-sol. Dans l’obscurité, le rat des champs voit de nombreuses familles de rats.
« Ce sont mes colocataires… » explique le rat des villes.

"Um... Actually we live down(stairs)…" says the city rat. He leads him down some stairs all the way to the basement. In the darkness, the country rat sees many families of rats.
"These are my housemates…" explains the city rat.

Le rat des villes ramène le rat des champs en haut pour le dîner. Dans la salle à manger il y a un festin de plats délicieux sur la table : du fromage, du pain, des biscuits, des gâteaux et des sodas. Il y a également de la nourriture chinoise.

The city rat brings the country rat back upstairs for dinner. In the dining room there is a feast of delicious foods on the table: cheese, bread, cookies, cakes, and sodas. There is also Chinese food.

Mais juste au moment où ils commencent à manger… BOUM ! Un chat aux dents et aux griffes pointues saute sur la table.

Mice being chased by the city cat

Le chat des villes chasse les deux rats de la table et les poursuit à travers la pièce. Les deux rats se cachent dans un trou dans le mur. Ils sont piégés.

The city cat chases the two rats off the table and (pursues them) across the room. The two rats hide in a hole in the wall. They are trapped.

Ils attendent en silence jusqu’à ce que le chat parte. Puis ils se faufilent à nouveau dans la salle à manger, mais toute la nourriture a disparu. Les humains des villes ont tout mangé !

They wait in silence until the cat leaves. Then, they sneak back again into the dining room, but all the food is gone. The city humans ate everything! 

Country mouse with suitcases

Le rat des champs se précipite au sous-sol et fait son sac pour partir. 
« Où vas-tu ? » demande le rat des villes.

The country rat rushes to the basement and packs (literally: makes) his bag to leave. 
"Where are you going?" asks the city rat.

« Chez moi. » dit le rat des champs. « Je veux retourner à la campagne. Ta vie en ville n’est pas si merveilleuse  après tout. Maintenant, s’il te plait, aide-moi à appeler un taxi. » 

Translate?

"Home.” he says. “I want to go back to the country. Your city life isn't so wonderful after all. Now, please, help me to call a taxi."

Morale : Parfois la vie des autres n’est pas aussi belle qu’ils vous le font croire.

Moral: Sometimes the lives of others are not as beautiful as they make you believe.
