Once upon a time, in a kingdom very far away, (there was) a king and a queen. The king was handsome and kind. But the real ruler of the kingdom was his wife — the queen.

Before becoming queen, she had worked in the castle kitchen. She was very poor. But she was also very beautiful and funny, and very good (strong) at Scrabble. So the king fell in love with her and married her.

Translate?

The king loved the queen very much. But the queen was always afraid (always had fear) that the king would meet a more beautiful woman.

Translate?

Fortunately the queen had a magic mirror. The mirror saw everything and knew everything.
Each day the queen looked in the mirror and asked:
“Mirror, my beautiful mirror, tell me, who is the most beautiful?”

* Fun fact: This is not what the mirror says in the Disney version of the tale. » (Magic mirror on the wall, who has perfect and pure beauty?) But ask French speakers what the mirror says, and most will tell you « Miroir, mon beau miroir ... » so that's what we've used here.)

Et la reine était heureuse.

Translate?

And the mirror replied:
"It's you, my queen! You are the most beautiful woman in the world."
And the queen was happy.

Translate?

But one day everything changed. The queen stood in front of the mirror and asked it the usual question:
"Mirror, my beautiful mirror, tell me, who is the most beautiful?"

Blanche-Neige »
La reine fut choquée.
« Qui est Blanche-Neige ? »

Translate?

And the mirror replied:
"You are very beautiful, my queen. But the most beautiful woman in the world is... Snow White."
The queen was shocked.
"Who is Snow White?"

"Snow White works in the castle kitchen. She has hair as black as night, lips as red as roses, and skin white as snow. At eight this morning she was a tad more beautiful than you."

« ARRRGGHH ! » hurla la reine. Elle tapa des pieds. Elle se tira les cheveux.
« Je vais tout perdre... »

"ARRRGGHH!!" yelled the queen. She stomped her feet. She pulled her hair. Then she sat down and started to cry.
"I will lose everything!"

Translate?

The queen was afraid. The queen's fear made her heart cold and hard. The queen summoned (made come) a trusted hunter (a hunter whom she trusted).

« Trouve la fille, cette Blanche-Neige », ordonna-t-elle. « Emmène-la loin, très loin. Emmène-la au plus profond des bois. »

Translate?

"Find the girl, this Snow White" she ordered. "Take her far, far away. Take her to the deepest (part of) the woods."
And the queen then looked the hunter in the eyes.
"She must never come back."

Translate?

The hunter found Snow White and took her into the forest. When they reached the darkest and deepest part of the forest, the hunter stopped.
"Go!" he whispered. "Run fast and go far, and never come back!"

The hunter tells Snow White to run

Allons, courage. »

Translate?

Snow White watched the hunter walk away and disappear.
"Well, I can't go home any more," said Snow White. She looked around at the dark and silent forest (looked at the dark and silent forest around her). It started to rain.
"But I can't stay here either. Chin up. Let's go. (Let's go, be brave.)"

Translate?

Snow White ran and ran (ran more and more). She crossed a stream and went up a hill, then descended into a dark valley. She ran all morning.

By midday, her pale skin and rosy cheeks were covered with mud and scratches. By early afternoon her long black hair was full of twigs and leaves.

Translate?

By nightfall, she was no longer beautiful. She was tired, (she was) hungry, and (she was) shivering with cold.

Translate?

But then Snow White smelled the smoke from a wood fire. She followed the smell and found a cottage in the woods. A warm golden glow came (emanated) from the windows.

Snow White sees a cottage

Elle frappa à la porte.
« Bonsoir ? » appela-t-elle. « Il y a quelqu’un ? »

Translate?

She knocked on the door.
"Good evening?" she called out. "Is there anyone (home)?"
There was no response. She opened the door and went inside.

Translate?

Inside the cottage there were seven little beds, seven little chairs, and a roaring fire. A large table was covered in dirty dishes.

Translate?

Snow White was very hungry and very thirsty. She found some bread and ate it all. She found some milk and drank the whole bottle. Then she sat in front of the fire to warm up. And she fell asleep.

Translate?

When she woke up, seven dwarfs were standing around her.
Snow white rubbed her eyes.
"Who are you?" she said.

The seven dwarfs

« Chut, tu vas lui faire peur ! » dit un autre.
« C’est une géante. C’est elle qui me fait peur ! » dit encore un autre nain.

Translate?

"This is our house!" said one of the dwarfs, angrily. "Who are YOU?"
"Hush, you'll scare her!" said another.
"She's a giant. It's she who scares me!" said yet another dwarf.

« C’est d’accord »,
dit Blanche-Neige.

Translate?

"Can I stay with you? I can't go home," said Snow White.
The dwarfs whispered among themselves.
"Okay," they said. "But only if you help us do the dishes. We hate doing the dishes."
"It's a deal!" said Snow White.

And so Snow White found a new home with the seven dwarfs. Every morning she did the dishes.
And every morning, when they left for work, the dwarfs said to her:

« Fais attention. N’ouvre la porte à personne. Et merci d’avoir fait la vaisselle. On déteste vraiment faire la vaisselle. »

Translate?

"Be careful! Do not open the door to anyone. And thank you for doing the dishes. We really hate doing the dishes."

Translate?

Meanwhile (during these times) at the castle, the queen felt better. She thought that Snow White was gone forever. But she was still a little afraid.
"Come and play Scrabble with me, my love!" called the king from the bottom of the stairs. "You can go first! (you can play the first)"

Translate?

"Maybe later, dearest," replied the queen. She was standing in front of the magic mirror.
"Mirror, my beautiful mirror, tell me who is the most beautiful?"

« Blanche-Neige est EN VIE ?? » cria la reine.

Translate?

The mirror replied: "You are very beautiful, my queen. But the girl Snow White is the most beautiful woman in the world."
"Snow White is ALIVE?!"
cried the queen.

The nervous magic mirror

Translate?

"She is living with the seven dwarfs in the forest," said the mirror. "Last night she was not very beautiful. But since ... one in the afternoon today, she is more beautiful than you."

« QUOI !?

Translate?

"WHAT?!" cried the queen. She went to fetch her old coat and boots from the closet.
"I'm going to have to kill her myself!"
She left the palace and got into (took) her fastest carriage. She headed for the forest. (She left in the direction of the forest.)

TOC TOC !

Translate?

Snow White was reading beside the fireplace when she heard a knock on the door.
Knock knock!

Translate?

She looked out the window. There was a woman holding a basket of fruit. The woman's face was beautiful, but she was wearing an old dress and old boots.

The fruit seller

« Oh, je veux bien un fruit... »
pensa Blanche-Neige.

Translate?

"Fruit! Fresh fruit! Apples, bananas, pears and oranges!"
"Oh, I want some fruit..."
thought Snow White.

La femme vit Blanche-Neige par la fenêtre.
« Bonjour ma chère! Veux-tu un fruit ? Aujourd’hui j’ai de délicieuses pommes. »

Translate?

The woman saw Snow White through the window.
"Hello, my dear! Do you want some fruit? Today I have some delicious apples... "

Translate?

"I love apples..." said Snow White. "But I'm not supposed to open the door to anyone... Those apples could be poisoned."

Translate?

"Oh, how silly," said the woman. She cut an apple in half. "Here. You can taste half and I will eat the other half. That way you will see that it is NOT poisoned."

Translate?

Snow White opened the door.
The woman gave her half an apple and ate the other half.

Translate?

When Snow White saw the woman eating this juicy apple, her mouth watered. She couldn't resist, and took a big bite out of the apple. (She bit with full teeth in the apple.)

Translate?

Almost immediately, Snow White fell to the ground. The apple was poisoned, but only half!
The queen sighed with relief. She quickly climbed back into her carriage and returned to the castle.

Translate?

When the dwarfs arrived home, they found Snow White lying on the ground. They yelled in her ears. They tickled her feet. They poured cold water on her face. But she did not wake up.

« Est-elle morte ? » demanda l’un des nains.
« Elle n’a pas l’air vivante... » dit un autre.

Translate?

"Is she dead?" asked one of the dwarfs.
"She doesn't seem to be alive..." said another.

Translate?

So the dwarfs made a beautiful glass coffin for their dear friend. They put it on a table surrounded by flowers in a beautiful corner of the forest.

Snow White lay there for more than a year: Spring, summer, autumn and winter.

One day, a prince was walking in the forest with his dog. He saw the strange glass coffin. He brushed off (removed) the leaves and saw Snow White inside.

« Oh zut! Oh flûte ! Oh punaise! » cria le prince.

It was just then that he tripped over his dog and knocked (made fall) the coffin off the table! Snow White rolled out of the coffin onto the grass.
"Oh no! Oh darn! Oh... fiddlesticks!" cried the prince.

Translate?

But then something amazing happened:
The piece of poisoned apple that was stuck in Snow White's throat fell out, and she began to cough.

« Pommes... » toussa-t-elle.
« Je vous demande pardon ? » dit le prince.
« Plus...de...pommes ! » toussa Blanche-Neige.

Translate?

"Apples..." she coughed.
"I beg your pardon?" said the prince.
"No... more... apples!"

That night, the queen stood in front of her magic mirror and asked her question:
"Mirror, my beautiful mirror, tell me who is the most beautiful?"

Translate?

And to her surprise, the mirror said:
"You are very beautiful, my queen. But Snow White is again the most beautiful woman in the world."

« QUOI ?!

Translate?

"WHAAAAT?!" yelled the queen. And in anger, she grabbed a shoe and threw it at the mirror.
The mirror broke into a thousand pieces and the magic it contained was released.

« NOOOOON !

Translate?

"NOOOOOOOOOO!" screamed the queen. And then, like Snow White, she collapsed to the ground and fell into a deep sleep.

While she slept, the queen had a strange dream. In her dream she was dancing in shoes of hot iron. Her feet burned and burned (burned again and again) but she couldn't stop dancing.

When the queen woke from this terrible dream, it was morning. The sun was shining, and the queen felt... different. The spell of the magic mirror had been broken, so she was no longer anxious or jealous. She felt free.
