Un jour d’été, deux randonneurs se promènent dans les collines jaunes et sèches. Il fait chaud, ils sont fatigués et ils ont faim.
One summer day, two hikers are walking in the yellow and dry hills. It is hot, they are tired and hungry.
Un peu plus loin, ils voient un arbre.
« J’ai tellement faim ! » dit l’un d’eux . « Tu crois que c’est un pommier ? J’ai envie d’une grosse pomme, bien rouge et croquante. »
A little bit further on, they see a tree.
“I’m so hungry!” says one of them. “Do you think it’s an apple tree? I crave a big apple, (very) red and crunchy.”
« Mais non, c’est pas un pommier, » dit l’autre. « C’est un poirier ! J’adore les poires. J’ai envie d’une poire bien jaune, juteuse et sucrée. »
“Of course not (literally: “But no”), it’s not an apple tree”, says the other. “It’s a pear tree! I love pears. I crave a (nice) yellow pear, juicy and sweet.”
Mais lorsqu’ils arrivent au pied de l’arbre, ce n’est pas un pommier. Ni un poirier. En réalité, l’arbre n’a pas de fruit.
« Oh, zut! » dit l’un. C’est un simple chêne ! »
But when they reach the foot of the tree, it is not an apple tree. Nor a pear tree. In fact, the tree has no fruit.
“Aww, rats!” says one of them. It’s a common oak tree”
Sur ce, le ciel devient gris et il se met à pleuvoir. Les randonneurs se précipitent sous le chêne pour rester au sec. Il pleut de plus en plus, mais le chêne est comme un grand parapluie. Les randonneurs ne prennent pas la pluie.
Just then (literally: Upon this) the sky turns grey and it starts raining. The hikers rush under the oak tree to stay dry. (Literally “stay in the dry) It rains more and more, but the oak tree is like a big umbrella. The hikers don’t get wet (literally: don’t take the rain).
Ils attendent sous le chêne que la pluie s’arrête. La nuit tombe.
« J’ai froid, » dit l’un. « Nous avons besoin d’un feu. Aide-moi à trouver du bois ! »
They wait under the oak tree for the rain to stop. Night falls.
“I’m cold”, says one. “We need a fire. Help me find some wood!”
Heureusement, il y a beaucoup de bouts de bois sous le chêne. Ils les ramassent et font un bon feu, puis s’assoient près du feu pour se réchauffer.
Fortunately, there are lots of bits of wood under the oak tree. They gather them and make a nice fire, then sit near the fire to get warm.
« Je suis fatigué, » dit l’un d’eux. « Nous allons devoir dormir ici. Aide-moi à faire un lit ! »
“I’m tired,” says one of them. “We will have to sleep here. Help me make a bed!”
Tous deux font un lit avec les feuilles tendres et vertes du chêne. Ils se blottissent dedans et s’endorment.
The two make a bed with the soft green leaves of the oak tree. They snuggle into them and fall asleep.
La pluie tombe et le vent souffle, mais tous deux dorment confortablement, au chaud et au sec, sous un "simple" chêne.
The rain falls and the wind blows, but the two sleep comfortably, in the warmth and in the dry, under a "common" oak tree.
Morale : Parfois, ce dont on a envie n’est pas ce dont on a besoin.
Moral: Sometimes, what we crave is not what we need.
