Il était une fois une fille qui s’appelait Raiponce. Raiponce vivait dans une grande tour dans la forêt. La tour n’avait ni échelle, ni escalier et certainement pas d’ascenseur. Il n’y avait aucun moyen de monter ou de descendre.
Once upon a time there was a girl named Rapunzel. Rapunzel lived in a tall tower in the forest. The tower had no ladder, no stairs and definitely no elevator. There was no way to get up or down.
Pourquoi Raiponce vivait-elle dans une tour ? Eh bien, tout commença avec une sorcière ...
Why did Rapunzel live in a tower? Well, it all started with a witch...
Comme vous le savez, les sorcières peuvent-être très jalouses. Elles détestent particulièrement que les gens volent des herbes dans leurs jardins.
As you know, witches can be very jealous. They particularly hate when people steal (that people are stealing) herbs from their vegetable gardens.
Mais malheureusement la mère de Raiponce ne savait pas ça à propos des sorcières. Il y a plusieurs années, lorsqu’elle était enceinte de Raiponce, elle se faufila chez sa voisine la sorcière et vola un peu de persil.
But unfortunately Rapunzel's mother did not know that about witches. Many years ago when she was pregnant with Rapunzel, she sneaked into the yard of her neighbour the witch, and stole a little parsley.
La sorcière la vit voler du persil. Elle donna deux choix à la mère de Raiponce:
The witch saw her steal the parsley. She gave Rapunzel's mother two choices:
Première option : La sorcière jetterait un sort à sa petite fille à naître. La fille n’aurait jamais de chance. Elle rencontrerait les mauvaises personnes, dirait les mauvaises choses et porterait les mauvais vêtements à chaque occasion. Elle ne vivrait jamais heureuse jusqu’à la fin des temps.
Option one: (First option:) The witch would cast a spell on her unborn baby girl. The girl would never be lucky. She would meet the wrong people, say the wrong things, and wear the wrong clothes on every occasion. She would never live happily ever after. (happily until the end of time.)
Deuxième option : Pour son dixième anniversaire, la fille irait vivre chez la sorcière. Elle serait son apprentie. La sorcière promit qu’au final la fille vivrait heureuse jusqu’à la fin des temps.
Option two: (Second option:) On her tenth birthday, the girl would go to live with the witch. She would be her apprentice. The witch promised that, in the end, the girl would live happily ever after.
La mère de Raiponce eut le cœur brisé. Elle choisit la deuxième option. Et le soir du dixième anniversaire de Raiponce, la sorcière vint la chercher. La sorcière mit Raiponce à l’intérieur de la grande tour dans les bois.
Rapunzel's mother was heartbroken. (Had her heart broken.) She chose the second option. And on the evening of Rapunzel's tenth birthday, the witch came to take her (came looking for her). The witch put Rapunzel inside the tall tower in the woods.
Après ça, chaque jour fut pareil au suivant pour Raiponce. Elle nettoyait sa chambre au sommet de la tour. Elle tressait ses très longs cheveux.
After that, every day was the same as the next for Rapunzel. She cleaned her room at the top of the tower. She plaited her very long hair.
Chaque jour à l’heure du déjeuner, la sorcière se rendait à la tour. Elle se tenait sous la fenêtre et criait : « RAIPONCE ! RAIPONCE ! LANCE-MOI TES CHEVEUX ! »
Every day at lunchtime, the witch came to the tower. She stood under the window and shouted: "RAPUNZEL! RAPUNZEL! THROW ME YOUR HAIR!"
Raiponce lançait ses cheveux par la fenêtre. La sorcière grimpait sur ses cheveux comme sur une corde et passait par la fenêtre.
Rapunzel threw her hair out the window. The witch climbed up her hair like a rope, and came in through the window.
Elle apprit à Raiponce comment fabriquer des remèdes avec des herbes. Et Raiponce aimait la sorcière. La sorcière était sa seule amie.
She taught Rapunzel how to make medicines with herbs. And Rapunzel loved the witch. The witch was her only friend.
Une nuit, Raiponce lisait un livre près de la fenêtre lorsqu’elle entendit quelqu’un en-bas :
« RAIPONCE ! RAIPONCE ! LANCE-MOI TES CHEVEUX ! »
One night, Rapunzel was reading a book by the window when she heard someone below:
"RAPUNZEL! RAPUNZEL! THROW ME YOUR HAIR!"
« C’est étrange, » pensa-t-elle. « La sorcière ne vient jamais aussi tard. »
Elle lança ses cheveux par la fenêtre et la personne grimpa, plus haut, plus haut.
"That's strange," she thought. "The witch never comes so late." She threw her hair out the window and the person climbed up, up, up (higher, higher).
Mais lorsque la personne arriva en haut, Raiponce vit que ce n’était pas la sorcière. C’était un homme !
But when the person arrived at the top, Rapunzel saw that it wasn't the witch. It was a man!
Raiponce saisit rapidement son livre et frappa l’homme sur la tête. « Sortez ! Sortez ! Vous n’êtes pas la sorcière ! »
L’étranger tomba au sol. « Aïe ! Aïe ! Arrêtez de me faire mal ! » supplia-t-il.
Rapunzel quickly grabbed her book and hit the man on the head.
"Get out! Get out! You're not the witch!"
The stranger fell to the ground. "Ow! Ow! Stop hurting me!" he begged.
« Qui êtes-vous ? Que voulez-vous ? Pourquoi avez-vous grimpé sur mes cheveux ? » demanda Raiponce.
« Je suis Justin ! Je m’appelle Justin ! » gémit-il. « Je suis venu vous sauver... ? »
"Who are you? What do you want? Why did you climb my hair?" demanded Rapunzel.
"I'm Justin! My name is Justin!" he whimpered. "I came here to save you...?"
Comme vous pouvez l’imaginer, Raiponce n’était pas vraiment impressionnée.
« Dites-moi Justin — », gronda Raiponce, « — Est-ce que j’ai l’air d’avoir besoin qu’on me sauve ? »
As you can imagine, Rapunzel was not very impressed.
"Tell me, Justin — " growled Rapunzel, "— Does it look like I need to be saved?"
« Je suis désolé. » dit Justin. « Je pensais que ce serait ma chance d’être un héros. »
« Que voulez-vous dire ? » demanda Raiponce.
"I'm sorry. I thought that this was my chance to be a hero."
"What do you mean?" asked Rapunzel.
« Ma chance d’être un héros ! Chaque homme doit être un héros au moins une fois dans sa vie. C’est la seule façon de vivre heureux jusqu’à la fin des temps. »
"My chance to be a hero! Every man needs to be a hero at least one time in his life. It's the only way to live happily ever after (happily until the end of time)."
Raiponce posa son livre.
« Je n’ai pas besoin d’un héros », dit-elle gentiment. « Allez-vous-en. Allez être un héros ailleurs. Il est tard. Je veux me coucher. »
Raiponce lança sa chevelure par la fenêtre.
Rapunzel put down her book.
"I don't need a hero," she said gently. "Go away. Go be a hero elsewhere. It's late. I want to go to bed."
Rapunzel threw her hair out the window.
« Eh bien, puis-je revenir pour vous parler demain ? » demanda Justin. « Vous avez l’air d’être gentille. Je vous ai amené une corde. C’est mieux que d’utiliser vos cheveux pour monter et descendre de la tour. »
"Well, can I come back to talk to you tomorrow?" Justin asked. "You seem to be nice. I brought you a rope. It's better than using your hair to get in and out of the tower."
« Bien, bien », dit Raiponce. « Au revoir Justin. » Et Justin passa par la fenêtre et descendit le long des cheveux de Raiponce.
"Fine, fine," said Rapunzel. "Goodbye, Justin." And Justin went out the window and climbed down Rapunzel's hair.
Le lendemain, Raiponce nettoya sa chambre et tressa ses cheveux.
La sorcière arriva pour le déjeuner. Elle amena un sandwich pour Raiponce et lui montra comment fabriquer des remèdes pour soigner le mal de tête.
The next day Rapunzel cleaned her room and braided her hair. The witch arrived at lunch time. She brought a sandwich for Rapunzel and showed her how to make medicine to cure headaches.
Mais en partant la sorcière vit la corde de Justin par terre.
« A qui est cette corde ? Où l’as-tu eue ? Veux-tu t’échapper ? »
But as the witch was leaving, she saw Justin's rope on the floor.
"Whose rope is this? Where did you get it? Do you want to escape?"
Raiponce essaya de s’expliquer mais la sorcière était trop contrariée.
« Je t’aime comme ma fille. Me détestes-tu tellement que tu veux partir ? »
« Il y avait un homme... » dit Raiponce.
Rapunzel tried to explain, but the witch was too upset.
"I love you as my daughter. Do you hate me so much that you want to leave?"
"There was a man..." said Rapunzel.
« UN HOMME ? » cria la sorcière. « Très bien ! Va le rejoindre ! Va ! » Des larmes coulaient sur son visage. « Va vivre heureuse jusqu’à la fin des temps avec cet... homme ! »
La sorcière jeta de la poudre magique par terre et Raiponce s’endormit immédiatement.
"A MAN?" the witch shouted. "Very well! Go join him! Go!" Tears ran down her face. "Go live happily ever after with this... man!"
The witch threw magic powder on the floor and Rapunzel immediately fell asleep.
Lorsqu’elle se réveilla, elle n’était plus dans la tour. Elle était allongée sous un arbre dans la forêt. Ses cheveux avaient été coupés.
Raiponce pleura pendant dix minutes puis se leva et décida de chercher sa tour.
When she woke up, she was no longer in the tower. She was lying under a tree in the forest. Her hair had been cut.
Rapunzel cried for ten minutes, then got up and decided to look for her tower.
Pendant ce temps, Justin revint à la tour comme il l’avait promis.
« Raiponce, Raiponce, lance-moi tes cheveux », cria-t-il sous la fenêtre. Et les cheveux tombèrent juste devant son visage.
Meanwhile, Justin returned to the tower as he had promised.
"Rapunzel, Rapunzel, throw me your hair!" he shouted under the window. And the hair fell down right in front of his face.
Mais vous vous en doutez ... ce n’était pas Raiponce dans la tour. C’était la sorcière.
Lorsque Justin arriva au sommet de la tour, la sorcière le tira par la fenêtre.
But as you might have guessed, it was not Rapunzel in the tower. It was the witch.
When Justin arrived at the top of the tower, the witch pulled him through the window.
« Alors c’est TOI l’homme qui veut me prendre ma Raiponce ! » dit-elle. « Je vois. Très bien. Allez vivre heureux jusqu’à la fin des temps ensemble. »
"So it's YOU who wants to take my Rapunzel!" she said.
"I see. Very well. Go live happily ever after together!"
La sorcière souffla une poignée de poudre dans son visage. Et, comme ça, Justin devint aveugle.
The witch blew a handful of powder into his face. And, just like that, Justin was (became) blind.
Après avoir marché toute la nuit, Raiponce retrouva le chemin de sa maison. Mais la tour avait disparu ! Il ne restait plus qu’un cercle brûlé au sol.
« Oh nooooon ! » cria Raiponce et elle tomba au sol en pleurant.
After walking all night, Rapunzel found her way home. But the tower was gone! All that was left was a burnt circle on the ground.
"Oh noooooo!" cried Rapunzel, and she fell to the ground sobbing.
Mais elle entendit alors une voix qui venait de derrière les arbres.
« Bonsoir ? Il y a quelqu’un ? Pouvez-vous m’aider ? Je ne vois pas. Je ne vois rien. »
But then she heard a voice coming from behind the trees.
"Good evening? Is there someone there? Can you help me? I can't see. I can't see anything."
C’était Justin. Lorsque Raiponce vit les yeux aveugles de Justin, elle sut quoi faire.
« Reste ici », dit-elle.
It was Justin. When Rapunzel saw Justin's blind eyes, she knew what to do.
"Stay here," she said.
Raiponce courut dans la forêt pour trouver quelques herbes. Elle les moulut et fabriqua un remède. Puis elle l’appliqua sur les yeux de Justin.
Puis elle pleura à nouveau.
Rapunzel ran into the forest to find some herbs. She ground them into a medicine. Then she applied it to Justin's eyes. Then she cried again.
« S’il-te-plaît ne pleure pas... » dit Justin doucement. « Pourquoi pleures-tu ? »
« Ma maison a disparu. Ma seule amie est partie. Tu es aveugle – c’est un désastre ! »
"Please don't cry..." said Justin softly. "Why are you crying?"
"My home is gone. My only friend left. You are blind — this is a disaster!"
« Tout ira bien », dit Justin calmement. « Fais-moi confiance — je suis un héros! »
"Everything will be fine," said Justin calmly. "Trust me, I'm a hero!"
Pendant trois jours, ils campèrent dans la forêt. Raiponce fabriquait des remèdes pour les yeux de Justin. Justin lui racontait toutes les fois où il avait essayé d’être un héros.
For three days they camped in the forest. Rapunzel made medicine for Justin's eyes. Justin told her about all the times he'd tried to be a hero:
Il avait essayé de combattre un géant! ... Mais le géant était très gentil et avait invité Justin à prendre le thé.
He had tried to fight a giant! ... But the giant was very nice and invited Justin inside for tea.
Il avait essayé de tuer un dragon! ... Mais le dragon avait des bébés dragons dans son nid. Justin n’avait pas pu le faire.
He had tried to kill a dragon! ... But the dragon had baby dragons in its nest. Justin couldn't do it.
Il avait sauvé un chat dans un arbre. Mais le chat était immédiatement remonté dedans.
« C’est vraiment dur d’être un héros ! » se plaignit-il.
He had rescued a cat from a tree! ... But the cat immediately climbed back up.
"It's really hard to be a hero!" he complained.
Lorsque Raiponce avait envie de pleurer, Justin racontait des blagues jusqu’à ce qu’elle pleure de rire. Quand elle n’arrivait pas à dormir, il écoutait tous ses soucis.
When Rapunzel felt like crying, Justin told jokes until she cried with laughter. When she could not sleep, he listened to all her worries.
Le quatrième jour, lorsque Raiponce se réveilla, Justin était déjà debout. Il la regardait avec ses brillants yeux bleus. Il pouvait voir !
« Merci, ma belle amie », dit-il. « Tu as soigné mes yeux. »
On the fourth day, when Rapunzel woke, Justin was already up. He was looking at her with his bright blue eyes. He could see!
"Thank you, my beautiful friend," he said. "You have fixed my eyes."
Justin et Raiponce allèrent au village de Justin. Le village plut à Raiponce. Justin l’aida à construire une nouvelle tour et cette fois-ci la tour avait un escalier. Raiponce passait ses journées à fabriquer des remèdes pour les malades du village.
Justin and Rapunzel walked to Justin's village. Rapunzel liked the village. (The village pleased Rapunzel.) Justin helped her build a new tower, and this time the tower had stairs. Rapunzel spent her days making medicines for the sick people of village.
Est-ce que Justin finit par devenir un héros ? Oui, bien sûr ! Il y a plein de sortes de héros. Mais les meilleurs et les plus braves des héros sont ceux qui aident leurs amis à traverser les temps durs. Et Justin avait aidé son amie Raiponce.
Did Justin eventually become a hero? Yes, of course! There are many kinds of heroes. But the best and bravest heroes are those who help their friends through hard times. And Justin had helped his friend Rapunzel.
Au final, Justin et Raiponce vécurent heureux jusqu’à la fin des temps – tout comme la sorcière l’avait promis.
In the end, Justin and Rapunzel lived happily ever after — just as the witch had promised.
