C’era una volta una ragazza di nome Raperonzolo. Raperonzolo viveva in un’alta torre in mezzo a una foresta. La torre non aveva le scale e di certo non c’era l’ascensore. Non c’era modo di salire né di scendere.
Once upon a time there was a girl named Rapunzel. Rapunzel lived in a tall tower in the middle of a forest. The tower had no stairs and there was certainly no elevator. There was no way to go up or down.
Perché Raperonzolo viveva in una torre? Beh, tutto era cominciato con una strega...
Why did Rapunzel live in a tower? Well, it all started with a witch...
Come sapete, le streghe possono essere molto gelose. Odiano specialmente le persone che rubano le erbe dai loro giardini. Ma, per sua sfortuna, la madre di Raperonzolo questo non lo sapeva.
As you know, witches can be very jealous. They especially hate people who steal herbs from their gardens. But, unfortunately (literally: to her misfortune), Rapunzel's mother did not know this.
Molti anni fa, quando era incinta di Raperonzolo, si intrufolò nel giardino della strega che abitava di fianco a lei e le rubò un po’ di prezzemolo.
Many years ago, when she was pregnant with Rapunzel, she sneaked into the garden of the witch who lived next to her, and she stole some parsley from her.
La strega la vide rubare il prezzemolo e diede alla mamma di Raperonzolo due possibilità.
The witch saw her steal parsley and gave Rapunzel's mother two options:
Opzione uno: la strega avrebbe maledetto la sua bambina non ancora nata. La ragazza sarebbe stata sempre sfortunata. Avrebbe incontrato la gente sbagliata, detto le cose sbagliate e indossato i vestiti sbagliati ad ogni occasione. Non sarebbe mai vissuta per sempre felice e contenta.
Option one: The witch would have cursed her unborn (not yet born) child. The girl would always be unlucky. She would have met the wrong people, said the wrong things, and worn the wrong clothes for every occasion. She would never have lived happily ever after.
Opzione due: quando avrebbe compiuto dieci anni, la bambina sarebbe andata a vivere con la strega. Sarebbe stata la sua apprendista. La strega le promise che, alla fine, la bambina sarebbe vissuta per sempre felice e contenta.
Option two: When she turned ten (complete ten years), the child would go to live with the witch. She would be her apprentice. The witch promised her that, in the end, the child would live happily ever after.
La madre di Reperonzolo era disperata. Scelse la seconda opzione. E, la sera del decimo compleanno di Raperonzolo, la strega venne a prenderla e la portò nell’alta torre in mezzo alla foresta.
Rapunzel's mother was heartbroken. She chose the second option. And, on the evening of Rapunzel's tenth birthday, the witch came to get her and took her to the tall tower in the middle of the forest.
