È mattina presto, e una volpe cammina attraverso il bosco. Ha fame e sta cercando qualcosa da mangiare. Vede un corvo seduto sul ramo più alto di un albero. Il corvo stringe un pezzo di formaggio nel becco.
It is early morning, and a fox is walking through the woods. She is hungry and looking for something to eat. She sees a crow sitting on the highest branch of a tree. The crow holds a piece of cheese in its beak.
“Gnam… quanto mi piace il formaggio!” pensa la volpe. “Ho trovato la colazione! Ma come faccio a farmi dare quel formaggio?”
La volpe pensa e ripensa. Poi le viene in mente un’idea brillante. “Lo farò parlare!”
"Yummm... How (much) I love cheese!" thinks the fox. "I have found my breakfast! But how do I get that cheese?"
The fox thinks and thinks. (Literally: thinks and rethinks — A common expression) Then a brilliant idea comes to her. (Literally: Then comes to mind a brilliant idea) "I will make him talk!"
La volpe si siede ai piedi dell’albero e guarda il corvo.
“Buongiorno, signor Corvo!” dice. “Che bella giornata, eh?”
Il corvo guarda la volpe senza dire niente.
The fox sits at the foot of the tree and looks at the crow.
"Good morning, Mister Crow!" she says. "What a beautiful day, huh?"
The crow looks at the fox without saying anything.
“Ho detto buon giorno!” dice la volpe. “Mi hai sentito? Forse da lassù non riesci a sentirmi...”
Il corvo è sospettoso. Stringe il formaggio con forza nel becco e non risponde.
“Mmm. È difficile,” pensa la volpe. Ma non si arrende. Sorride al corvo.
“I said good morning!" says the fox. "Did you hear me? Maybe up there you can't hear me...”
The crow is suspicious. He holds the cheese firmly (with strength) in his beak and doesn't respond.
“Hmm. This is difficult,” thinks the fox. But she doesn’t give up. She smiles at the crow.
“Sai, sei un volatile bellissimo,” dice la volpe. “Le tue piume sono così scintillanti. I tuoi occhi sono così luminosi. Il tuo becco è così… uhm… affilato. Sei perfetto, in tutto e per tutto.”
Il corvo continua a non dire niente.
“You know, you are a beautiful bird,” says the fox. "Your feathers are so sparkly. Your eyes are so bright. Your beak is so… uh… sharp. You're perfect, all in all.” (literally: in all and for all)
The crow continues to say nothing.
Al che la volpe dice: “Signor Corvo, la tua voce è tanto magnifica quanto te? Ho sentito che hai una voce meravigliosa. Per favore, canta per me. Giusto una canzone. Poi racconterò a tutti che sei l’uccello più incredibile di tutti — il re di tutti i volatili!”
To which the fox says: “Mister Crow, is your voice as magnificent as you are? I heard that you have a marvellous voice. Please, sing for me. Just one song. Then I will tell everyone that you are the most incredible bird of all — the king of all the birds!"
Il corvo è contento. Vuole che tutti sappiano che la sua è la voce più bella di tutte. Vuole che tutti sappiano che è il re dei volatili.
The crow is happy. He wants everyone to know that his is the most beautiful voice of all. He wants everyone to know that he is the king of the birds.
Accenna un sorriso. E poi il suo sorriso si fa più grande. Apre la bocca per dedicare alla volpe la sua canzone più bella e… plop! Il formaggio gli cade dal becco, dritto nella bocca della volpe. La volpe lo inghiotte in un sol colpo.
He smiles a little. (Literally: hints at a smile.) Then his smile gets bigger. He opens his mouth to sing (literally: dedicate) to the fox his best song, and... plop! The cheese falls from his beak, directly into the mouth of the fox. The fox swallows it in one gulp. (Literally: In one beat.)
“Mmmmmm. Grazie per la squisita colazione, signor Corvo!” ride la volpe mentre se ne va. “Ti auguro buona giornata!”
“Mmmm… Thank you for the exquisite breakfast, Mister Crow!" laughs the fox as she walks away. "I wish you a lovely day!"
Morale : State attenti a chi vi fa troppi complimenti. Di solito vuole qualcosa da voi.
Moral: Be careful of those who compliment you too much. They usually want something from you.
