Il topolino di campagna e il topolino di città
Questo è un topolino di città. Vive in una grande città con edifici alti e un sacco di negozi e ristoranti. Ma oggi sta facendo visita a un suo amico, un topolino di campagna.
This is a city mouse. He lives in a big city with tall buildings and lots of (literally: a bag of) shops and restaurants. But today he is visiting (literally: making a visit to) a friend of his, a country mouse.
Il topolino di campagna vive in un comodo nido ai piedi di un albero. La sua casa è piccola, ma calda e accogliente.
The country mouse lives in a comfortable nest at the foot of a tree. His home is small, but warm and welcoming.
Il topolino di campagna prepara la cena usando quello che cresce nel suo giardino: mais, ghiande, carote, un bicchiere d’acqua fredda. Nel frattempo, il topolino di città non fa altro che parlare:
The country mouse prepares dinner using what grows in his garden: corn, acorns, carrots, a glass of cold water. Meanwhile, the city mouse does nothing but talk:
“La città è fantastica. Vado al teatro, al museo. Casa mia ha VENTI stanze. Devi venirmi a trovare PER FORZA! Hai mai provato il cibo cinese?”
“The city is fantastic. I go to the theatre, to the museum. My house has TWENTY rooms. You MUST come visit me (literally: come to me to find), ABSOLUTELY! (literally: for strength) Have you ever tried Chinese food?"
Quella notte, il topolino di campagna sogna di vivere in città. Sogna di mangiare in ristoranti sofisticati, di dire cose sofisticate e di comprare cappelli sofisticati in negozi sofisticati. Sogna di mangiare cibo cinese.
“Che meraviglia!” pensa. “Anche io voglio vivere in città!”
That night, the country mouse dreams of living in the city. He dreams of eating in sophisticated restaurants, saying sophisticated things and buying sophisticated hats in sophisticated shops. He dreams about eating Chinese food.
"How wonderful!" he thinks. "I also want to live in the city!"
Il mattino dopo, il topolino di campagna accetta di andare a trovare il topolino di città. Fa i bagagli e insieme raggiungono la casa del topolino di città: è enorme!
The next morning, the country mouse agrees to go to visit (literally: find) the city mouse. He packs his bags and together they travel to (literally: reach) the house of the city mouse: it's enormous!
Ci sono venti stanze piene zeppe di mobili bellissimi. Il topolino di campagna è senza parole.
“Qual è la mia stanza?” chiese.
There are twenty rooms crammed full of beautiful furniture. The country mouse is speechless.
"Which is my room?" he asks.
“Uhm… a dire il vero, noi viviamo quaggiù…” dice il topolino di città conducendolo giù per una scalinata che porta nello scantinato. Al buio, il topolino di campagna vede moltissime famiglie di topolini.
“Questi sono i miei coinquilini…” gli spiega il topolino di città.
"Um ... actually (literally: to tell the truth), we live down here ..." says the city mouse, leading him down a staircase (that leads) to the basement. In the dark, the country mouse sees many families of mice.
"These are my roommates ..." the city mouse explains to him.
A ora di cena, lo accompagna di nuovo al piano superiore. Il tavolo della sala da pranzo è pieno di cibi deliziosi: formaggio, pane, biscotti, torte e bevande gassate. C’è anche del cibo cinese.
At dinner time, he accompanies him back upstairs. The dining room table is filled with delicious food: cheese, bread, cookies, cakes and sodas (fizzy drinks). There is also some Chinese food.
Ma proprio quando stanno per mangiare… CRASH! Un gatto con denti e artigli affilati salta sul tavolo.
MMMMEEEEEOOOWWW!
But just when they are about to eat… CRASH! A cat with sharp teeth and claws jumps up onto the table.
MMMMEEEEEOOOWWW!
Il gatto di città costringe i due topolini a saltare giù dal tavolo. Li insegue fino a quando i due non riescono a nascondersi in un buco nel muro. Sono in trappola.
The city cat chases the two mice off the table (lit: forces the two mice to jump off the table). He chases them to (lit: until the two manage to hide in) a hole in the wall. They are trapped.
Aspettano in silenzio che il gatto se ne vada via. A quel punto, ritornando in sala da pranzo alla chetichella, ma il cibo ormai non c’è più. Gli umani si sono mangiati tutto!
They wait silently for the cat to go away. At that point, they sneak back to the dining room (lit: go back to the dining room stealthily), but the food is no longer there. The humans have eaten everything!
Il topolino di campagna torna di fretta nello scantinato e fa i bagagli per andarsene.
“Dove vai?” gli chiede il topolino di città.
The country mouse hurries back to the basement and packs his bag to leave.
"Where are you going?" the city mouse asks him.
“A casa,” dice il topolino di campagna. “Voglio tornare in campagna. La vita in città non è tutta questa meraviglia, dopotutto. Ora, per favore, aiutami a chiamare un taxi.”
“Home,” says the country mouse. “I want to go back to the countryside. Life in the city isn't so wonderful (literally: all this wonder), after all. Now, please, help me to call a taxi.”
Morale: A volte, la vita delle altre persone non è così bella come vogliono farti credere.
Moral: Sometimes other people's lives aren't as good as they want to make you believe.
