Una bambina è seduta vicino alla finestra della sua cameretta e guarda la strada. Aspetta l’estate.
A little girl is sitting by her bedroom* window and looking at the street. She is waiting for summer.
* camera + etta = small room. This is what you'd commonly call a child's bedroom.
Vuole mangiare il gelato e andare a nuotare. Vuole i picnic e le fragole.
She wants to eat ice cream and go swimming. She wants picnics and strawberries.
È stufa di guanti e giubbotti. È stufa dei cieli grigi e della neve.
She is sick of gloves and jackets. She is sick of grey skies and snow.
La mamma le dice che l’estate è lontana. Il papà le dice che presto nevicherà di nuovo.
Her mama tells her that summer is far away. Her papa tells her it will snow again soon.
Ma lei se ne sta seduta davanti alla finestra, alla ricerca di qualcosa che le dica che è arrivata l’estate.
But she stays sitting in front of the window, looking for something to tell her that summer has arrived.
Proprio in quel momento, vede un furgoncino dei gelati in fondo alla strada.
Just then, she sees an ice cream van down on the street.
“Un camion dei gelati! Ma allora DEVE essere arrivata l’estate!” dice ridendo.
“An ice cream truck! But then summer MUST have arrived!" she says laughing.
Corre verso l’armadio e si mette il costume da bagno e il cappello estivo.
She runs to the wardrobe and puts on her bathing suit and summer hat.
Scende le scale di corsa, apre la porta e…
She runs down the stairs, opens the door, and…
CRUNCH!
Abbassa lo sguardo e vede che ha i piedi in mezzo all’erba ghiacciata.
CRUNCH!
She looks down and sees that her feet are in the middle of the frozen grass.
“Ma… ho visto il camion dei gelati,” dice, confusa.
“But… I saw the ice cream truck*,” she says, confused.
* "Camion" = "truck", "furgone" = van, "furgoncino" = little van, "camioncino" = little truck. The -cino suffix here just means "little", and these can all be used interchangeably to transport ice cream.
Alza lo sguardo giusto in tempo per vedere il furgoncino dei gelati che svolta l’angolo per entrare nell’officina del meccanico.
She looks up (lit: lifts her gaze) just in time to see the ice cream van turning the corner to enter the mechanic's workshop.
Morale: Non sta bene trarre conclusioni in base a un’unica osservazione: un camion dei gelati non fa estate.
Moral: It is not good (lit: “it doesn’t stay good") to draw conclusions based on a single observation: one ice cream truck does not make summer.
