La gallina rossa vive in una fattoria. Lavora duramente tutto il giorno: becca il terreno, si rotola nella polvere, si siede in un cespuglio. E, a volte… depone un uovo.
This is the story of a red hen.
The red hen lives on a farm. She works hard all day: She pecks at the ground, she rolls in the dust, she sits in a bush. And, sometimes… she lays an egg.
La gallina rossa ha tre amici: un gatto, un cane e un cavallo. Questi animali non lavorano mai.
The red hen has three friends: A cat, a dog, and a horse. These animals never work.
Al gatto piace dormire sotto al sole. Al cane piace dormire all’ombra. E al cavallo piace passare tutta la giornata davanti alla televisione.
The cat likes to sleep in the sun. The dog likes to sleep in the shade. And the horse likes to spend the whole day in front of the television.
Un giorno la gallina rossa vede un cespuglio pieno di lamponi maturi e succosi.
“Lamponi!” grida. “Che buoni! Possiamo preparare una torta ai lamponi!”
One day the red hen sees a bush full of ripe and juicy raspberries.
"Raspberries!" she squeals. "How delicious! We can make a raspberry cake!"
La gallina rossa corre a dirlo ai suoi amici.
“Ragazzi! Ho trovato dei lamponi! Possiamo preparare una torta!”
The red hen runs to tell her friends.
"Guys! I found some raspberries! We can make a cake!"
Il cane sbava. “Evviva!”
Il gatto si lecca le labbra. “Ottimo!”
Il cavallo dimena la coda. “Un’idea fantastica!”
The dog drools. “Hoorah!”
The cat licks its lips. “Excellent!”
The horse flicks its tail. “A fantastic idea!”
“Quindi… chi vuole aiutarmi a raccoglierli?” chiede la gallina rossa.
"So... who wants to help me pick them?" asks the red hen.
“Io no,” dice il cane, “sono troppo occupato.”
“Io no,” dice il gatto, “sono troppo stanco.”
“Io no,” dice il cavallo, “sto guardando la TV.”
"Not me," says the dog, "I'm too busy."
"Not me," says the cat, "I'm too tired."
"Not me," says the horse, "I'm watching TV."
“Allora lo faccio da sola,” dice la gallina. Così va e raccoglie i lamponi, uno a uno, senza l’aiuto di nessuno.
“Then I will do it myself,” says the red hen. So she goes and picks the berries, one by one, without anyone's help.
“Va bene, adesso ci servono farina, zucchero, latte e burro. Chi vuole aiutarmi a prenderli?” chiede la gallina rossa.
"Ok, now we need flour, sugar, milk and butter. Who wants to help me get them?" asks the red hen.
“Io no,” dice il cane, “sono troppo occupato.”
“Io no,” dice il gatto, “sono troppo stanco.”
“Io no,” dice il cavallo, “sto guardando la TV.”
"Not me," says the dog, "I'm too busy."
"Not me," says the cat, "I'm too tired."
"Not me," says the horse, "I'm watching TV."
“Allora lo faccio da sola,” dice la gallina rossa.
Va fino alla dispensa e prende la farina e lo zucchero. Va fino al frigo e prende il burro e il latte.
“Then I'll do it myself,” says the red hen.
She goes to the pantry and gets the flour and sugar. She goes to the fridge and gets the butter and milk.
Quindi versa tutto in una grande ciotola.
Senza l’aiuto di nessuno.
Then she pours everything into a large bowl.
Without anyone's help.
“Chi vuole aiutarmi a girare l’impasto per la torta?” chiede la gallina rossa.
“Io no,” dice il cane, “sono troppo occupato.”
“Io no,” dice il gatto, “sono troppo stanco.”
“Io no,” dice il cavallo, “sto guardando la TV.”
"Who wants to help me mix the cake batter?" asks the red hen.
"Not me," says the dog, "I'm too busy."
"Not me," says the cat, "I'm too tired."
"Not me," says the horse, "I'm watching TV."
“Allora lo faccio da sola!” dice la gallina rossa. Gira l’impasto fino a renderlo liscio e cremoso. Quindi, con gentilezza, aggiunge i lamponi.
“Then I'll do it myself!” says the red hen. She mixes the batter until it is smooth and creamy. Then, gently, she adds the raspberries.
Versa l’impasto in una tortiera, quindi lo mette nel forno.
Senza l’aiuto di nessuno.
She pours the batter into a cake pan, then puts it in the oven.
Without anyone's help.
(Tic toc, tic toc)
Presto si sente un delizioso profumino provenire dalla cucina. Lo sente il cane. Lo sente il gatto. Lo sente anche il cavallo. Corrono tutti in cucina.
(Tick tock, tick tock)
Soon you can smell a delicious smell coming from the kitchen. The dog smells it. The cat smells it. The horse smells it too. They all run to the kitchen.
La gallina rossa tira fuori la torta dal forno. La mette su un piatto e la spolvera di zucchero.
The red hen takes the cake from the oven. She puts it on a plate and sprinkles it with sugar.
“Chi vuole aiutarmi a mangiare questa torta?” chiede la gallina rossa.
“Io!” dice il cane.
“Io!” dice il gatto.
“Io!” dice il cavallo.
“Who wants to help me eat this cake?” asks the red hen.
“Me!” says the dog.
“Me!” says the cat.
“Me!” says the horse.
“Non penso proprio,” dice la gallina rossa. “Non mi avete aiutata a prepararla, per cui non mi aiuterete a mangiarla.”
“I don’t think so,” says the red hen. “You would not help me make it, so you will not help me eat it.”
Corre via con la torta e la mangia tutta. Fino all’ultimo pezzo. Senza l’aiuto di nessuno.
She runs away with the cake and eats it all. Every last crumb. (Lit: until the last piece.) All by herself.
