Un giorno d’estate, due escursionisti camminano lungo le colline brune e secche. Fa caldo, e loro sono stanchi e affamati.
One summer day, two hikers are walking in (literally: along) the dry brown hills. It's hot, and they're tired and hungry.
A un certo punto, vedono un albero poco più avanti.
“Ho una gran fame!” dice uno dei due. “Pensi che sia un albero di mele? Ho voglia di una grossa mela croccante.”
At one point, they see a tree just ahead.
“I am so hungry! (literally: I have a big hunger!)” says one of them. “Do you think it's an apple tree? I crave a big crunchy apple.”
“Nah, non è un albero di mele,” dice l’altro. “È un albero di pere! Le pere sono il mio frutto preferito. Io voglio una pera dolce e succosa!”
“Nah, it's not an apple tree,” says the other. “It's a pear tree! Pears are my favorite fruit. I want a sweet and juicy pear!”
Ma quando raggiungono l’albero, vedono che non è un melo, né un pero. Di frutti non ce ne sono proprio.
“Ah, cavoli,” dice uno. “È solo una noiosa quercia!”
But when they reach the tree, they see that it is neither an apple tree, nor a pear tree*. There aren't any fruits at all!
“Ah rats (literally: cabbages),” says one. “It's just a boring oak tree!”
"Un melo" is a shorter way of saying “un albero di mele" (an apple tree), and "un pero" is a shorter way of saying “un albero de pere” (a pear tree).
Proprio in quel momento, il cielo si fa grigio e comincia a piovere. Gli escursionisti corrono a ripararsi sotto la quercia. Piove a dirotto, ma la quercia è come un grande ombrello, e i due escursionisti non si bagnano.
Just then, the sky turns gray and it starts to rain. The hikers run for shelter under the oak tree. It rains heavily, but the oak tree is like a big umbrella, and the two hikers don't get wet.
Restano sotto la quercia aspettando che smetta di piovere. Scende la notte.
“Ho freddo,” dice uno dei due. “Dobbiamo accendere un fuoco. Aiutami a trovare della legna!”
They stay under the oak waiting for the rain to stop. Night falls.
“I'm cold,” says one of the two. “We need to light a fire. Help me find some wood!”
Per fortuna, sotto la quercia ci sono un sacco di legnetti. Gli escursionisti li raccolgono e accendono un bel fuocherello. Si siedono vicino alle fiamme per riscaldarsi.
Luckily, under the oak tree there are lots of sticks. The hikers collect them and light a nice little fire*. They sit by the flames to warm up.
“fuocherello” is a diminutive of “fuoco”, so the “little” part is embedded in the word.
“Sono stanco,” dice uno dei due. “Stanotte dovremo dormire qui. Aiutami a preparare un giaciglio!”
“I'm tired,” one of them says. “Tonight we will have to sleep here. Help me prepare a bed!"
“un giaciglio” is a makeshift or temporary kind of bed. A proper bed would be “un letto”.
Gli escursionisti preparano un giaciglio utilizzando le foglie verdi e morbide della quercia. Si distendono sulle foglie e si addormentano.
The hikers prepare a bed using the soft green leaves of the oak. They stretch out on the leaves and fall asleep.
La pioggia cade e il vento soffia, ma gli escursionisti sono al caldo e all’asciutto – sotto la “noiosa” quercia.
The rain falls and the wind blows, but the hikers are warm and dry – under the “boring” oak tree.
Morale: A volte, quello che vogliamo non è necessariamente ciò di cui abbiamo bisogno.
Moral: Sometimes, what we want is not necessarily what we need.
