The next morning, after the woodcutter had left for work, the stepmother woke the children up.
„Wacht auf! Wacht auf, ihr kleinen Narren! Heute hat Euer Vater Geburtstag. Ich möchte ihm für sein Geburtstagsessen einen Apfelkuchen backen. Geht in den Wald und pflückt ein paar Äpfel. Dieses Mal komme ich auch mit. Ich weiß, wo wir einen großen Apfelbaum finden können.”
“Wake up! Wake up you little fools! Today is your father’s birthday. I want to bake him an apple pie for his birthday dinner. Go into the forest and pick some apples. This time I will come too. I know where we can find a big apple tree.”
Sie gab ihnen einen Laib Brot für ihr Mittagessen und dann drängte sie sie aus der Tür. Hänsel hatte keine Zeit, Kieselsteine zu sammeln.
She gave them a loaf of bread for their lunch, and then she hurried them out the door. Hansel did not have time to collect pebbles.

But clever Hansel had a plan. He did not eat his bread for lunch. Instead, he made tiny crumbs of it. Every few steps, he dropped a crumb to mark the path.

They followed their stepmother down the path, around a corner, and through the forest. "Further! Further!" said the stepmother.
They walked deep into the forest. They turned left (literally: they went to the left). They turned right (went to the right). "Further! Further!" said the stepmother.
Endlich hielten sie an und die Stiefmutter setzte sich, um sich auszuruhen. Sie zeigte auf einen sehr dunklen Teil des Waldes. „Der Apfelbaum ist dort drüben!”
Finally they stopped, and the stepmother sat down to rest (herself). She pointed to a very dark part of the forest. "The apple tree is over there!"
Die Kinder gingen tiefer in den Wald, aber sie sahen keinen Apfelbaum.
„Wo?”, riefen sie.
„Noch ein bisschen weiter!”, rief die Stiefmutter.
The children walked deeper into the forest, but they didn't see the apple tree.
"Where?" they called.
"Just a little further!" called the stepmother.
Hänsel und Gretel gingen tiefer und tiefer in den Wald, aber sie sahen den Apfelbaum immer noch nicht.
„Wo?”, riefen sie ein zweites Mal.
„Noch ein bisschen weiter!”, rief die Stiefmutter. Ihre Stimme war nun nur noch sehr schwach zu hören.
Hansel and Gretel walked deeper and deeper into the forest, but they still didn't see the apple tree.
"Where?" they called a second time.
"Just a little further!" replied the stepmother. Her voice was very faint now.
Hänsel und Gretel gingen und gingen, weiter und weiter. Kein Apfelbaum. „Wo?”, riefen sie ein drittes Mal.
Aber es kam keine Antwort von ihrer Stiefmutter. Sie war weg.
Hansel and Gretel walked and walked, further and further. No apple tree.
"Where?" they called a third time.
But there was no reply from their stepmother. She was gone.
„Oh nein! Wir sind verloren!”, weinte Gretel.

"Oh no! We are lost!” cried Gretel.
“Don't worry, I have a plan” said Hansel. He turned around to look for the crumbs, but they had disappeared!
The hungry birds had stolen every crumb of bread!
„Ich fürchte mich”, schluchzte Gretel. „Und mir ist kalt, und ich bin hungrig, und ich möchte nach Hause! Aber unser Weg ist verschwunden!”
„Keine Sorge. Alles wird gut”, sagte Hänsel und versuchte, mutig zu wirken. Aber auch er hatte Angst.
"I'm scared," wept Gretel. "And I'm cold, and hungry, and I want to go home!"
"Don't worry. Everything will be alright,” Hansel said, and tried to act brave. But he was scared, too.
Diese Nacht schliefen die Kinder in ein paar weichen Büschen, um warm zu bleiben.
That night, the children slept in some soft bushes to stay warm.
