C'era una volta un taglialegna che viveva nel mezzo del bosco con sua moglie, una donna buona e gentile. Avevano due figli: Hansel e Gretel.
There was once a woodcutter who lived in the middle of the forest with his wife — a kind and gentle woman. They had two children: Hansel and Gretel.
Non avevano molti soldi, ma la loro casa era sempre calda e i bambini avevano sempre della zuppa e del pane da mangiare, non avevano mai fame.
They did not have much money, but their home was always warm and the children always had soup and bread to eat. They were never hungry.
Un anno particolarmente freddo, la mamma di Hansel e Gretel si ammalò e morì.
One particularly cold year, Hansel and Gretel's mother became ill and died.
Il taglialegna finì per sposare un'altra donna che non era buona e gentile ma cattiva ed egoista perché voleva diventare ricca.
The woodcutter ended up marrying another woman, who wasn't kind and gentle, but (rather) cruel and selfish, because she wanted to become rich.
Voleva mangiare cibi sofisticati come l'arrosto, le patate al forno, le verdure arrosto, le crostate e i frutti esotici dei paesi caldi, ma era di cattivo umore perché potevano solo permettersi zuppa e pane ad ogni pasto.
She wanted to eat fancy foods like roast (meat), roast potatoes, roast vegetables, pies, and exotic fruits from sunny lands. She was angry that they could only afford soup and bread for every meal.
“Zuppa e pane! Zuppa e pane! Ogni giorno! Zuppa e pane! Sono così stanca della zuppa e del pane!” si lamentava.
"Soup and bread! Soup and bread! Every day! Soup and bread! I am so tired of soup and bread!" she complained.
La matrigna era particolarmente cattiva con Hansel e Gretel perché era convinta che fossero la causa della povertà della famiglia.
The stepmother was very cruel to Hansel and Gretel because she believed they were the cause of the family's poverty.
“Voi bambini mangiate troppo! Siete la ragione per cui mangiamo soltanto zuppa e pane!”
Voleva che i bambini sparissero.
"You children eat too much! It's your fault that we only have soup and bread!"
She wanted the children gone.
Un giorno, mentre il taglialegna era fuori a tagliare la legna, la matrigna chiamò Hansel e Gretel nella cucina della casetta.
One day, while the woodcutter was out cutting wood, the stepmother called Hansel and Gretel into the kitchen of their cottage.
“Non c'è abbastanza cibo per la zuppa di stasera,” disse la matrigna. “Andate nel bosco a raccogliere dei funghi per la zuppa di funghi o saremo tutti affamati stasera. Io so dove crescono i funghi migliori...”

"Walk north for two hours, turn left at the tall trees, walk east for twenty minutes then continue straight, cross the stream, turn right onto the main road...
... attraversate il buco nel recinto, camminate sotto il ponte (attenti all'orco) e poi per tre chilometri nel bosco, qui troverete dei funghi sotto un albero. Partite ora così arriverete in tempo per cena!”

Hansel e Gretel erano spaventati. Sapevano che il bosco era fitto e scuro e che era facile perdersi.
“Non preoccuparti! Ho un piano!” Sussurrò Hansel a Gretel. Andò sul retro della casa e si riempì le tasche con dei sassolini bianchi presi dal giardino.
Hansel and Gretel were scared. They knew the forest was deep and dark, and that it was easy to get lost.
"Don't worry! I have a plan!” Hansel whispered to Gretel. He went to the back of the house and filled his pockets with white pebbles taken from the garden.
I due bambini poi si incamminarono, seguendo le indicazioni della matrigna. Ogni manciata di passi Hansel faceva cadere un sassolino per terra.
Then the two children started walking, following the stepmother's directions. Every few steps, Hansel dropped a little white pebble on the ground.
Camminarono per ore, ma non trovarono i funghi.
“È quasi notte, ho paura!” disse Gretel piangendo.
“Non aver paura, so come trovare la strada di casa!” disse Hansel.
They walked for hours, but they did not find the mushrooms.
"It’s almost night, I’m scared," said Gretel, crying.
"Don't worry. I know how to find the way home!" said Hansel.

Their stepmother was furious. She didn't expect that the children would find their way home. "Little brats! Where are the mushrooms?" the stepmother shouted.
"We have nothing to eat! You will have no dinner tonight! Go straight to bed!”
The children went to bed hungry.
La mattina seguente il taglialegna uscì per andare al lavoro e la matrigna svegliò i bambini.
The following morning the woodcutter left to go to work, and the stepmother woke up the children.
“Sveglia! Sveglia piccoli marmocchi! Oggi è il compleanno di vostro padre e io voglio cucinargli una torta di mele per cena. Andate nel bosco e prendete delle mele. Questa volta verrò con voi, io so dove trovare l'albero di mele più grande”.
“Wake up! Wake up you little brats! Today is your father’s birthday and I want to cook him an apple pie for dinner. Go into the forest and pick some apples. This time I will come with you. I know where to find the biggest apple tree.”
Diede loro una pagnotta per il pranzo e poi li spinse fuori dalla porta, Hansel non ebbe tempo di raccogliere dei sassolini.
She gave them a loaf of bread for their lunch, and then she pushed them out the door. Hansel did not have time to collect any pebbles.
Ma Hansel era furbo e aveva un piano, non mangiò la sua pagnotta per pranzo ma la ruppe in tante piccole briciole. Ogni manciata di passi lasciava cadere delle briciole per segnare il sentiero.
But Hansel was clever and he had a plan. He didn't eat his loaf for lunch but he tore it in a lot of tiny crumbs. Every few steps he dropped some crumbs to mark the path.

They followed their stepmother down the path, around a corner, and through the forest. "Go further! Further!" said the stepmother.
They walked deep into the forest. They turned left then right. "Further! Further!" said the stepmother.
Finalmente si fermarono e la matrigna si sedette per riposare, indicando un punto molto scuro del bosco. “L'albero di mele è proprio lì!”
Finally they stopped, and the stepmother sat down to rest, pointing to a very dark part of the forest. "The apple tree is right there!"
I bambini si addentrarono nel bosco ma non videro l'albero di mele.
“Dove?” urlarono.
“Un po' più in là!” urlò la matrigna.
The children walked deeper into the forest, but they didn't see the apple tree.
"Where?" they shouted.
"Just a little further!" shouted the stepmother.
Hansel e Gretel camminarono ancora più dentro il bosco ma non riuscivano a trovare l'albero di mele.
“Dove?” gridarono una seconda volta.
“Un po' più in là!” rispose la matrigna. La sua voce si sentiva appena.
Hansel and Gretel walked even deeper into the forest, but they couldn't find the apple tree.
"Where?" they shouted a second time.
"Just a little further!" replied the stepmother. Her voice was barely audible.
Hansel e Gretel camminarono e camminarono, sempre più in fondo. Non videro nessun albero di mele.

"I'm scared," said Gretel, crying. "And I'm cold, and hungry, and I want to go home!"
"Don't worry. Everything will be alright,” Hansel said, trying to be brave. But he was scared, too.
Quella notte, i bambini dormirono in dei cespugli soffici per stare caldi.
That night, the children slept in some soft bushes to stay warm.
Quando si svegliarono il sole splendeva, gli uccellini cantavano e c'era un odore dolce e delizioso nell'aria.
“Ho tanta fame”, disse Gretel. “Credo di sentire odore di biscotti...”
“Guarda!" disse Hansel, indicandola col dito. "Una casa!”
When they woke up, the sun was shining, the birds were singing, and there was a sweet, delicious smell in the air.
"I am so hungry," said Gretel. "I think I smell cookies…."
"Look!" said Hansel, pointing. "A house!"
Era la casa più strana che avessero mai visto, le mura sembravano fatte di biscotti al limone gialli, le finestre sembravano fatte di cioccolata, il tetto di caramelle verdi e rosse.
It was the strangest house they had ever seen. The walls looked like yellow lemon cookies, the windows looked like they were made of chocolate, the roof (looked like it was made) of green and red candies.
Hansel era molto affamato quindi corse verso la casa e prese un pezzo di muro. “Sa proprio di biscotto al limone!” disse stupito.
Hansel was very hungry, so he ran towards the house and took a piece of the wall. "This tastes just like a lemon cookie!" he said, shocked.
Gretel prese un pezzo di finestra e si riempì la bocca: “è cioccolata!”
I bambini non riuscivano a smettere di mangiare.
“Vivremo qui per sempre!” annunciò Hansel, mangiando il cortile che era in realtà fatto di crostata di mele.
Gretel grabbed a piece of a window and stuffed it in her mouth. "This is chocolate!"
The children could not stop eating.
"We'll live here forever," Hansel declared, munching on the porch, which was actually made of apple pie.
Mentre cercavano di addentare un pezzo della caramella viola al posto della porta, questa si aprì silenziosamente.
Just as they were just about to bite off a piece of the purple candy door (literally: purple candy instead of a door), it quietly swung open.

"Hello!" said an old woman behind the door. "Do you like sweets, dear children? I have more inside the house! Come in! Come in! Don’t be afraid!"

The old woman looked kind and friendly, and the two children went inside.

Appena Hansel e Gretel furono dentro, sbatté la porta e la chiuse a chiave. I bambini erano in trappola.
As soon as Hansel and Gretel were inside, she slammed the door and locked it. The children were trapped.
La strega prese Hansel per i polsi: “sei troppo magro!” disse. “Devo farti ingrassare per benino prima di mangiarti!”
Spinse Hansel in una gabbia e chiuse la porta.
The witch grabbed Hansel by his wrist. "You're too thin!" she said. "I must fatten you up well before I eat you!" Then she threw Hansel into a cage and locked the door.
Si girò verso Gretel e disse: “piccola marmocchia, tu farai prima i servizi e poi mangerò anche te!”
She turned to Gretel. "Foolish girl, You will do the chores first and then I'll eat you too!"
Hansel cominciò a piangere e implorava, “per favore non mi mangi!”
Gretel invece rimase calma. “Non preoccuparti, ho io un piano ora!” sussurrò Gretel.
Hansel began to cry and beg, “please don’t eat me!”. Gretel instead remained calm.
“Don’t worry. Now I have a plan!” whispered Gretel.
Appena la strega si addormentò Gretel andò di nascosto dal fratello e gli diede un rametto.
“Domani mattina la strega controllerà se sei abbastanza grasso da poter essere mangiato. Quando la vedi arrivare dalle questo rametto invece del tuo dito”, ordinò la bambina.
As soon as the witch was asleep, Gretel snuck over to her brother, and she gave him a twig.
“Tomorrow morning the witch will see if you are fat enough to eat. When she comes, give her this twig instead of your finger,” she ordered.
Come aveva detto Gretel, la mattina successiva la strega zoppicò verso Hansel e ringhiò: “Fai sporgere il dito dalla gabbia, voglio vedere se sei grasso abbastanza da poterti mangiare!”
Just like Gretel said, in the morning, the witch hobbled over to Hansel and growled, “Stick your finger through the cage. I want to see if you are fat enough to eat!”
Hansel le diede il rametto.
“Sei ancora troppo magro!” si lamentò. “Vieni qua marmocchia, dai a tuo fratello più dolci da mangiare.”
Hansel gave her the twig.
"You're still too thin!" she complained. “Come here little brat, and give your brother more sweets to eat.”
La storia continuò per una settimana intera. Ogni giorno la strega controllava se Hansel fosse ingrassato, ogni giorno Hansel le dava il rametto.
This story continued for an entire week. Every day, the witch checked to see if Hansel had gotten fat, and every day, Hansel gave her the twig.
Alla fine la strega si stancò di aspettare, l'ottavo giorno disse a Gretel: “Vieni qua marmocchia, Accendi il forno, oggi mangerò bambino arrosto con carote e patate! Controlla se il forno è abbastanza caldo da arrostire tuo fratello”.
Finally, the witch got tired of waiting. On the eighth day, she said to Gretel: "Come here, little brat, light the oven. Today I am eating roasted boy with carrots and potatoes! Check if the oven is hot enough to roast your brother."

But Gretel was a clever child and she had another plan. She started crying and said: "I am too stupid. How do I know if the oven is hot enough? Can you show me?"
La strega borbottò e si lamentò: “Inutile bambina! Controllerò il forno da sola”.
The witch muttered and grumbled: "Useless child! I'll check the oven myself."
La strega si piegò per guardare il fuoco che bruciava con fiamme arancioni e Gretel la spinse velocemente nel forno, chiudendo la porta. SBAM!
Quella fu la fine della strega.
The witch bent down to look at fire (which was) burning with orange flames, and quickly Gretel pushed her into the oven, closing the door. THUD!
That was the end of the witch.
Gretel aprì la gabbia di Hansel e i bambini riempirono un cesto con torte, biscotti, crostate e caramelle poi corsero più veloce che potevano.
Gretel unlocked Hansel’s cage, and the children filled a basket with cakes, cookies, pies, and candies, then they ran away as fast as they could.
Corsero tutta la notte, attraverso il bosco, sotto il ponte, strisciarono attraverso il buco nella recinzione, girarono a sinistra, poi a destra, sinistra, destra, sinistra, destra. Alla fine sentirono qualcuno che tagliava la legna da lontano.

It was the woodcutter! The children ran to their father and hugged him and kissed him. He cried and cried. But he was actually very happy.
"My beloved children! Where were you?"

Più avanti lo stesso anno, Hansel e Gretel erano nel panificio in città quando videro una anziana donna chiedere soldi per strada. Era la loro matrigna!
“Bambini! Aiutatemi per favore, ho fame!” disse la donna.
Later that year, Hansel and Gretel were in the bakery in town when they saw an old woman begging for coins in the street. It was their stepmother!
“Children! Please help me! I am hungry!” she begged.
Gretel ci pensò per un momento, andò dentro il panificio e comprò un piccolo pezzo di pane e una piccola ciotola di zuppa.
“Ecco qua”, disse Gretel, “zuppa e pane, il tuo pasto preferito!”

Gretel thought for a moment. She went inside the bakery and bought a small loaf of bread and a small bowl of soup.

Hansel and Gretel never saw their stepmother ever again.
