C’erano una volta un re e una regina. Il re era bellissimo e gentile, ma la vera sovrana del regno era sua moglie – la regina
Once upon a time there was king and a queen. The king was handsome and kind, but the real rule of the kingdome was his wife — the queen.
Prima di diventare regina, la moglie del re lavorava nelle cucine del castello. Era molto povera, ma era anche bellissima, e divertente, e bravissima a giocare a Scarabeo. E così il re si innamorò di lei e la sposò.
Before becoming queen, the king's wife worked in the castle kitchens. She was very poor, but she was also beautiful, and funny, and very good at playing Scrabble. And so the king fell in love with her and married her.
Il re amava tantissimo sua moglie. Eppure, la regina aveva sempre paura che il re potesse incontrare una donna più bella di lei.
The king loved his wife very much. But the queen was always afraid (always had fear) that the king would meet a woman more beautiful than she.
Per fortuna, la regina aveva uno specchio magico. Lo specchio vedeva tutto e sapeva tutto.
Fortunately, the queen had a magic mirror. The mirror saw everything and knew everything.
Ogni giorno la regina si guardava allo specchio e domandava:
“Specchio, specchio delle mie brame, chi è la più bella del reame?”
Every day the queen looked at herself in the mirror and asked:
“Mirror, mirror of my desires, who is the most beautiful in the kingdom?”
(This is the translation of the traditional Italian version of "Mirror, mirror on the wall..." — It sounds much better in Italian!)
E lo specchio rispondeva:
“Sei tu, mia regina! Tu sei la donna più bella del reame.”
E la regina era felice.
And the mirror replied:
“It's you, my queen! You are the most beautiful woman in the kingdom.”
And the queen was happy.
Ma un giorno tutto cambiò. La regina era in piedi di fronte allo specchio e faceva la solita domanda:
“Specchio, specchio delle mie brame, chi è la più bella del reame?”
But one day everything changed. The queen stood in front of the mirror and asked the usual question:
"Mirror, mirror of my desires, who is the most beautiful in the kingdom?"
E lo specchio rispose:
“Tu sei bellissima, mia regina. Ma è Biancaneve la donna più bella del reame.”
La regina era scioccata.
“Chi è Biancaneve?”
And the mirror replied:
"You are beautiful, my queen. But Snow White is the most beautiful woman in the kingdom."
The queen was shocked.
"Who is Snow White?"
“Biancaneve lavora nelle cucine del castello. Ha i capelli neri come la notte, labbra rosse come le rose, e la pelle bianca come la neve. Alle otto di stamattina era un tantinello più bella di te.”
"Snow White works in the castle kitchens. Her hair is black like night, lips red like roses, and skin white like snow. At eight'o'clock this morning she was a tiny bit more beautiful than you."
“Arrrrggghh!!!” gridò la regina. Sbatté i piedi per terra. Si strappò i capelli.
“Perderò tutto!”
"Arrrrggggh!!" cried the queen. She stomped her feet (on the ground). She pulled her hair (tore her hair out).
"I will lose everything!"
La regina aveva paura. E così il cuore della regina diventò freddo e duro come la pietra.
The queen was afraid (had fear). And so the queen's heart became cold and hard as stone.
La regina convocò un cacciatore fidato nelle sue stanze.
“Trova quella ragazza, Biancaneve,” ordinò. “Portala il più lontano possibile. In mezzo ai boschi.”
The queen summoned a trusted hunter to her rooms.
"Find that girl, Snow White," she ordered. "Take her as far away as possible. Into the middle of the woods."
E quindi la regina guardò il cacciatore dritto negli occhi:
“Non deve tornare mai più.”
And then the queen looked the hunter straight in the eyes:
"She must never come back."
Il cacciatore trovò Biancaneve e la portò nella foresta. Quando arrivarono nella parte più buia e profonda della foresta, il cacciatore si fermò.
“Vai!” sussurrò. “Corri veloce, e non tornare mai più a casa!”
The hunter found Snow White and took her into the forest. When they arrived at the darkest and deepest part of the forest, the hunter stopped.
"Go!" he whispered. "Run fast, and never go home!"
Biancaneve guardò il cacciatore sparire.
“Beh, non posso andare a casa,” disse. Si guardò attorno: la foresta era buia e silenziosa. Cominciò a piovere.
“Ma nemmeno posso rimanere qui. Su, Biancaneve, forza.”
Snow White watched the hunter disappear.
"Well, I can't go home," she said. She looked around: the forest was dark and silent. It started to rain.
"But I can't stay here either. Come on, Snow White, let's go."("Up, Snow White, strength!")
Biancaneve corse tantissimo. Attraversò un ruscello, salì su per una collina e scese in una vallata oscura. Corse per tutta la mattina.
Snow White ran and ran. (Ran a lot.) She crossed a stream, went up a hill, and down into a dark valley. She ran all morning.
A mezzogiorno, la sua pelle pallida e le sue guance rosa erano ricoperte di graffi e fango. Nel primo pomeriggio, i suoi lunghi capelli neri erano pieni di foglie e rametti.
At midday, her pale skin and rosy cheeks were covered in scratches and mud. By early afternoon her long black hair was full of leaves and twigs.
Di notte, non era più bella. Era stanca, affamata e tremava per il freddo. Ma proprio allora Biancaneve sentì l’odore della legna che bruciava. Seguì l’odore e trovò un piccolo cottage nel bosco. Dalle finestre usciva una bagliore caldo e dorato.
By night-time, she was no longer beautiful. She was tired, hungry, and shivering with the cold. But just then Snow White smelled woodsmoke (the burning wood). She followed the smell and found a small cottage in the woods. From the windows came a warm, golden glow.
Bussò alla porta.
“Salve?” disse. “C’è nessuno in casa?”
Nessuna risposta. Aprì la porta ed entrò.
She knocked on the door.
"Hello?" she said. "Is there anybody home?" ("There is nobody at home?")
Nobody replied. She opened the door and went inside.
Dentro al cottage c’erano sette lettini, sette sedioline, e un fuoco che scoppiettava. Un lungo tavolo era ricoperto da piatti sporchi.
Inside the cottage there were seven little beds*, seven little chairs*, and a crackling fire. A long table was covered in dirty dishes.
*"-ini" is the plural of "ino", which is sometimes added to words to indicate that they're small (diminutive). Here it has been added to "letti" (beds) and "sedie" (chairs).
Biancaneve aveva una fame e una sete pazzeschi. Trovò del pane e lo mangiò tutto. Trovò del latte e lo bevve tutto. Poi si sedette di fronte al fuoco per scaldarsi un po’. E in un attimo si addormentò.
Snow White was very hungry and thirsty. (was crazy hungry and thirsty.) She found some bread and ate it all. She found some milk and drank it all. Then she sat down in front of the fire to warm up a little. And in a moment she fell asleep.
Quando si svegliò, trovò sette nani che la fissavano. Biancaneve si stropicciò gli occhi.
“Chi siete?” chiese.
When she woke up, she found seven dwarfs staring at her. Snow White rubbed her eyes.
"Who are you?" she asked.
“Questa è casa nostra!” disse uno dei nani arrabbiato. “Chi sei tu?”
“Shhh, così la spaventi!” disse un altro.
“È un gigante. È lei che spaventa me!” disse un altro ancora.
"This is our house!" said one of the dwarfs angrily. "Who are YOU?"
"Shhh, you'll scare her!" said another.
"She's a giant. It's she who scares me!" said yet another.
“Posso stare con voi?” disse Biancaneve. “Non posso tornare a casa.”
I nani cominciarono a parlottare tra di loro.
“Va bene,” dissero. “Ma solo se ci aiuti a lavare i piatti. Noi odiamo lavare i piatti.”
“D’accordo,” disse Biancaneve.
"Can I stay with you?" said Snow White. "I can't go home."
The dwarfs began to mutter between themselves.
"Very well," they said. "But only if you help us wash the dishes. We HATE washing dishes."
"It's a deal (agreed)," said Snow White.
E quindi Biancaneve aveva trovato una nuova casa e viveva con i sette nani. Ogni mattina Biancaneve lavava i piatti. E ogni mattina, quando i nani uscivano per andare a lavorare, le dicevano:
And so Snow White found a new home, and lived with the seven dwarfs. Every morning Snow White washed the dishes. And every morning when the dwarfs were leaving to go to work, they said:
“Sta’ attenta! Non aprire la porta a nessuno. E grazie per aver lavato i piatti. Noi odiamo tantissimo lavare i piatti.”
"Be careful! Don't open the door to anyone. And thank you for washing the dishes. We really hate washing the dishes."
Nel castello, la regina si sentiva meglio. Pensava che Biancaneve se ne fosse andata per sempre. Ma aveva sempre un po’ di paura.
In the castle, the queen felt better. She thought that Snow White was gone forever. But she was still a little afraid. (She always had a little fear.)
“Vieni a giocare a Scarabeo con me, amore mio!” gridò il re in fondo alle scale. “Puoi cominciare tu!”
"Come and play Scrabble with me, my love!" cried the king from the bottom of the stairs. "You can go first!"(You can start)
“Forse più tardi, caro,” rispose la regina. Era di fronte allo specchio magico.
“Specchio specchio delle mie brame, chi è la più bella del reame?”
"Maybe later, dear," replied the queen. She was in front of the magic mirror.
"Mirror, mirror of my desires, who is the most beautiful in the kingdom?"
Lo specchio rispose: “Tu sei bellissima, mia regina. Ma Biancaneve è la donna più bella del reame.”
“Biancaneve è viva!?” gridò la regina.
The mirror replied: "You are beautiful, my queen. But Snow White is the most beautiful woman in the kingdom."
"Snow white is alive?!" cried the queen.
“Vive nella foresta con i sette nani,” disse lo specchio. “Ieri notte non era bellissima. Ma ora, all’una del pomeriggio, è più bella di te.”
"She is living in the forest with the seven dwarfs," said the mirror. "Last (yesterday) night she was not beautiful. But now, since one'o'clock in the afternoon, she is more beautiful than you."
“Maledizione!” urlò la regina. Andò all’armadio e tirò fuori il suo vecchio cappotto e degli stivali. “Dovrò ucciderla io stessa!”
Corse fuori dal palazzo e saltò sulla sua carrozza più veloce, e subito schizzò via verso la foresta.
"Curses!" yelled the queen. She went to the closet and pulled out her old coat and boots. "I'll have to kill her myself!"
She ran out of the palace and jumped into her fastest carriage, and immediately sped off towards the forest.
Biancaneve stava leggendo un libro seduta accanto al fuoco quando sentì qualcuno bussare alla porta.
Toc toc!
Snow White was reading a book, sitting by the fire, when she heard someone knock on the door.
Knock knock!
Sbirciò fuori dalla finestra. C’era una donna con un cesto di frutta. La donna aveva un viso bellissimo, ma portava un vestito logoro e degli stivali vecchissimi.
She peered out the window. There was a woman with a basket of fruit. The woman had a beautiful face, but she wore a worn-out dress and very old boots.
“Frutta! Frutta fresca! Mele e banane e pere e arance!”
“Oh, mi va proprio un po’ di frutta…” pensò Biancaneve.
La donna vide Biancaneve dietro la finestra.
“Ciao, cara! Vuoi un po’ di frutta? Oggi ho delle mele deliziose...”
"Fruit! Fresh fruit! Apples and bananas and pears and oranges!"
"Oh, I really want some fruit..." thought Snow White.
The woman saw Snow White through the window.
"Hello, dear! Do you want some fruit? Today I have delicious apples..."
“Mi piacciono le mele…” disse Biancaneve. “Ma non dovrei aprire la porta a nessuno. Quelle mele potrebbero essere avvelenate...”
"I like apples..." said Snow White. "But I shouldn't open the door to anyone. Those apples could be poisoned..."
“Oh, che sciocchezza,” disse la donna. Tagliò una mela a metà. “Ecco. Mangiane solo metà, e io mangerò l’altra metà. Così saprai che non sono avvelenate.”
"Oh, what nonsense," said the woman. She cut an apple in half. "Here. Eat just half,and I will eat the other half. That way you'll know that they're not poisoned."
Biancaneve aprì la porta. La donna le diede mezza mela e tenne per lei l’altra metà.
Snow White opened the door. The woman gave her half an apple and kept the other half for herself.
Quando Biancaneve vide la donna mangiare quella mela succosa, le venne l’acquolina in bocca. Non riuscì a resistere e diede un grande morso alla mela che aveva tra le mani.
When Snow White saw the woman eating the juicy apple, her mouth watered. She couldn't resist, and took a big bite of the apple that she had in her hands.
Quasi immediatamente, Biancaneve cadde a terra. La mela era avvelenata, ma solo una metà!
La regina sospirò sollevata. Risalì di fretta sulla sua carrozza e ritornò al castello.
Almost immediately, Snow White fell to the ground. The apple was poisoned, but only one half!
The queen sighed with relief. She hurried back to her carriage and returned to the castle.
Quando i nani arrivarono a casa, trovarono Biancaneve distesa sul pavimento. Le gridarono nelle orecchie. Le fecero il solletico ai piedi. Le gettarono dell’acqua gelata sulla faccia. Ma Biancaneve non si svegliò.
When the dwarfs arrived home, they found Snow White lying on the floor. They yelled in her ears. They tickled her feet. They poured ice water on her face. But Snow White didn't wake up.
“Ma, è morta?” chiese un nano.
“Non sembra essere viva…” disse un secondo.
"Err... is she dead?" asked one dwarf.
"She doesn't seem to be alive..." said a second.
E, così, i nani costruirono una bellissima bara di vetro per la loro cara amica. La misero su un tavolo nel posto più bello della foresta, circondata da tantissimi fiori.
And so, the dwarfs built a beautiful glass coffin for their dear friend. They put it on a table in the most beautiful part of the forest, surrounded by many flowers.
Biancaneve rimase lì per oltre un anno. Venne la primavera, e poi l’estate, l’autunno e l’inverno.
Snow White remained there for over a year. Spring came, and the summer, autumn, and winter.
Un giorno, un principe stava camminando per la foresta insieme al suo cane. Vide la strana bara di vetro di Biancaneve. Scansò le foglie e vide che dentro c’era Biancaneve.
One day, a prince was walking through the forest with his dog. He saw Snow White's strange glass coffin. He brushed off the leaves and saw Snow White inside.
E proprio allora inciampò sul suo cane e fece cadere a terra la bara ! Biancaneve rotolò fuori dalla bara e finì sull’erba.
“Oh no! Oh cavolo! Oh accidenti!” gridò il principe.
And just then he tripped over his dog and knocked the coffin onto the ground! Snow White rolled out of the coffin and ended up on the grass.
"Oh no! Oh bother! Oh drat!" cried the prince.
Ma poi successe una cosa incredibile: Il pezzo di mela avvelenata che si era incastrato nella gola di Biancaneve venne fuori, e Biancaneve cominciò a tossire.
But then an incredible thing happened: The piece of poisoned apple that was stuck in Snow White's throat came out, and Snow White began to cough.
“Mele…” disse Biancaneve tossendo.
“Prego?” disse il principe.
“Niente… più… mele!”
"Apples..." said Snow White, coughing.
"Pardon?" said the prince.
"No... more... apples!"
Quella stessa notte, la regina se ne stava in piedi davanti allo specchio magico e faceva la sua solita domanda:
“Specchio, specchio delle mie brame, chi è la più bella del reame?”
That same night, the queen stood in front of the magic mirror and asked her usual question:
"Mirror, mirror of my desires, who is the most beautiful in the kingdom?"
E, inaspettatamente, lo specchio disse:
“Tu sei bellissima, mia regina. Ma Biancaneve è di nuovo la donna più bella del reame...”
And, unexpectedly, the mirror said:
"You are beautiful, my queen. But Snow White is again the most beautiful woman in the kingdom."
“COSA?!” gridò la regina. E, furibonda, prese una scarpa e la tirò contro lo specchio. Lo specchio si ruppe in mille pezzi, e la magia al suo interno fuggì via.
"WHAT?!" cried the queen. And, furious, she took a shoe and threw it at (against) the mirror. The mirror broke into a thousand pieces, and the magic inside it was released (escaped away).
“Nooooooooo!” urlò la regina. E poi, proprio come Biancaneve, collassò sul pavimento e si addormentò profondamente.
"Nooooooooo!" screamed the queen. And then, just like Snow White, she collapsed onto the floor and fell into a deep sleep.
Mentre dormiva, la regina fece uno strano sogno. Nel sogno ballava e aveva ai piedi delle scarpe di ferro rovente. I piedi le bruciavano da impazzire, e quindi non poteva smettere di ballare.
While she slept, the queen had a strange dream. In her dream she danced, and on her feet were shoes of scorching hot iron. Her feet burned and burned (burned like crazy), and so she couldn't stop dancing.
Quando la regina si svegliò da quel terribile sogno, era ormai mattina. Il sole brillava, e la regina si sentiva… diversa. L’incantesimo dello specchio era infranto, e lei non si sentiva più ansiosa o gelosa. Si sentiva libera.
When the queen woke up from that terrible dream, it was (already) morning. The sun was shining, and the queen felt... different. The spell of the mirror was broken, and she no longer felt anxious or jealous. She felt free.
Scese giù per le scale e andò da suo marito. Aveva una voglia matta di giocare a Scarabeo.
She went downstairs to find her husband. She had a crazy urge to play Scrabble.
E cos’era successo a Biancaneve?
And what happened to Snow White?
I nani furono contenti di vedere che era ancora viva. Invitarono il principe a cena, e, quando il principe seppe che a nessuno piaceva lavare i piatti, comprò loro una lavastoviglie.
The dwarfs were happy to see that she was still alive. They invited the prince for dinner, and, when the prince learned that nobody liked wishing the dishes, he bought them a dishwasher.
E vissero tutti felici e contenti.
Everyone lived happily ever after.
