Había una vez un jovencito llamado Jack. Vivía con su mamá en una pequeña granja al pie de las Montañas Nubladas. Jack y su mamá eran muy pobres. La única manera de ganar dinero era vendiendo la leche de su vaca, Bess.
Once there was a young man named Jack. He lived with his mother on a small farm at the foot of the Foggy Mountains. Jack and his mother were very poor. The only way they made (lit: won) money was selling the milk from their cow, Bess.
Una mañana, la mamá de Jack lo despertó temprano. Todavía estaba oscuro afuera. Ella estaba llorando.
“Jack, ¡despierta! ¡Ve al mercado y vende nuestra vaca, Bess!”
“Pero, ¿por qué?” preguntó Jack, bostezando.
One morning, Jack's mother woke him up early. It was still dark outside. She was crying.
"Jack, wake up! Go to the market today and sell our cow, Bess!"
"But why?" asked Jack, yawning.
“Necesitamos dinero para arreglar nuestra casa. Hay huecos en el techo. Las ventanas están rotas. Por todos los cielos, no tenemos puerta en la entrada. Ya va a llegar el invierno. Si no arreglamos la casa, el frío nos matará”.
"We need money to fix our house. There are holes in the roof. The windows are broken. For heaven's sake (lit: for all the skies), we don't have a front (entrance) door. Winter will soon arrive. If we don't fix the house, the cold will kill us."
Jack empacó su bolso y buscó a Bess en el establo.
Mientras salía por el portón, escuchó a su mamá gritar: “¡Vale por lo menos cinco monedas de oro! ¡No la vendas por menos!”
Jack packed his bag and fetched Bess from the barn.
As he was walking out the gate, he heard his mother shout: "She is worth at least five gold coins! Don’t sell her for less!"
Cuando Jack estaba a mitad del camino, se encontró a un viejo.
“¡Buenos días, muchacho!” dijo el viejo. “¿A dónde vas hoy?”
“Buenos días, señor”, dijo Jack. “Voy al mercado a vender a mi vaca. Se llama Bess”.
When Jack was half way (literally: half of the road), he met an old man.
"Good morning, lad!" said the old man. "Where are you going today?"
"Good morning, sir," replied Jack. "I'm going to the market to sell my cow. Her name is Bess."
“Es una vaca muy buena”, dijo el viejo. “¡Te compro a Bess, y te pagaré un buen precio!”
“¿Cuánto pagará por ella?" dijo Jack. "¡No aceptaré menos de cinco monedas de oro!”
"She is a very nice cow," said the man. "I will buy Bess from you, and I will pay you a very good price!"
“How much will you pay for her?" said Jack. "I won’t accept less than five gold coins!”
“No tengo cinco monedas de oro”, susurró el viejo, “pero tengo estos cinco frijoles negros. ¡Estos frijoles son mágicos! ¡Valen más que oro! Si te llevas estos frijoles, serás más rico que el hombre más rico del mundo”.
“I don't have five gold coins," whispered the man, "but I have these five black beans. These beans are magic beans! They are worth more than gold! If you take these beans, you will be richer than the richest man in the world.”
Jack pensó en su mamá. Pensó que ella sería muy feliz si ellos fueran ricos. Podrían arreglar el techo, las ventanas, y la puerta de la entrada. ¡Tal vez podrían comprar una vaca nueva!
“Está bien”, dijo Jack. “Es un trato. ¡Deme los frijoles!”
Jack thought about his mother. He thought how she would be very happy if they were rich. They could fix the roof, the windows, and the front door. Maybe they could buy a new cow!
“Okay," said Jack. "It's a deal. Give me the beans."
Jack estaba muy emocionado. Corrió a casa y le mostró a su mamá los frijoles. Pero en vez de estar feliz, ella estaba furiosa.
Jack was very excited. He ran home and showed his mother the beans. But instead of being happy, she was furious.
“¡Niño tonto! ¡Intercambiaste nuestra única vaca por un puñado de frijoles!” Ella agarró los frijoles y los botó por la ventana. Luego se sentó al costado del fuego y lloró.
“Foolish boy! You traded our only cow for a handful of beans!”
She grabbed the beans and threw them out the window. Then she sat down beside the fire and cried.
Jack estaba devastado. Se encerró en su cuarto. Se sintió muy tonto. Su vaca ya no estaba, y ahora eran más pobres que antes. ¡Qué desastre! ¡Y era su culpa!
Jack was devastated. He locked himself in his bedroom. He felt so silly. Their cow was gone (literally: was no longer), and now they were poorer than before. What a disaster! And it was his fault!
La mañana siguiente cuando Jack abrió sus cortinas, vio algo muy extraño. En el mismo lugar donde su mamá había tirado los frijoles, había una gigante y verde planta de frijoles. Iba desde el piso, arriba, arriba, arriba... hasta las nubes.
The next morning when Jack opened his curtains, he saw something very strange. In the same place where his mother had thrown the beans, there was a giant, green beanstalk. It stretched from the ground, up, up, up… all the way to the clouds (literally: until the clouds).
“¡Los frijoles son mágicos!” susurró Jack. “El viejo estaba diciendo la verdad!”
“The beans are magic!” whispered Jack. "The old man was telling the truth!"
La mamá de Jack aún estaba dormida, así que Jack decidió escalar la planta de frijoles para encontrar las riquezas de las que el viejo había hablado.
“Solo cinco monedas de oro," pensó Jack. "Eso es todo lo que necesito para hacer feliz a mi mamá”.
Jack's mother was still asleep, so Jack decided to climb the beanstalk to find the riches the old man had talked about.
"Just five gold coins," thought Jack. "That's all I need to make my mother happy."
Jack escaló arriba, arriba, arriba hacia el cielo. Cuando alcanzó la cima, tenía mucha hambre. Vio un castillo a lo lejos.
“Tal vez puedo encontrar algo de comida en ese castillo...” pensó.
Jack climbed up, up, up, into the sky. When he reached the top, he was very hungry. He saw a castle in the distance.
"Maybe I can find some food in that castle…" he thought.
Jack caminó hacia la puerta del castillo y tocó dos veces. ¡Toc toc!
Una gigante abrió la puerta. Era tan grande como una casa. Pero tenía una sonrisa amable y ojos cariñosos.
Jack walked up to the front door of the castle and knocked twice. Knock knock!
A giantess opened the door. She was as big as a house. But she had a warm smile and kind (caring) eyes.
“Disculpe, Señora Gigante”, dijo Jack. “¿Me podría dar algo de comer, por favor? ¡Tengo hambre!”
“¡Oh, pobre chico!” dijo la gigante. Podía ver que Jack era muy delgado. “¡Por supuesto! ¡Pasa! ¡Pasa!”
"Excuse me, Mrs. Giant," said Jack. "Could you please give me something to eat? I am so hungry!"
"Oh you poor boy!" said the giantess. She could see that Jack was very thin. "Of course! Come in! Come in!"
La amable gigante le dio a Jack un poco de estofado de vegetales. Él los estaba disfrutando tanto que no se dio cuenta cuando la mesa de la cocina empezó a temblar.
Pum... Pum... Pum... Fuertes pasos venían del pasillo...
The kind giantess gave Jack a little vegetable stew. He was enjoying it so much that he didn't notice when the kitchen table started to shake.
Thump... Thump... Thump… Loud footsteps came down the hallway...
“Oh cielos”, susurró la gigante. “¡Es mi esposo! ¡Está de vuelta del trabajo! ¡No le gustan los humanos! ¡Rápido! ¡Escóndete!”
Jack se escondió en la despensa.
"Oh heavens," whispered the giantess. "It's my husband! He is back from work! He doesn't like humans! Quick! Hide!"
Jack hid in the pantry.
El gigante entró dando pisotones a la cocina y olfateó el aire.
“¡FE FI FO FUM! Hola, mi bella esposa... ¡ESPERA! ¿Acaso huelo a humano? ¡AGH! ¿DÓNDE ESTÁ?”
The giant stomped (literally: entered giving stomps) into the kitchen and sniffed the air.
"FEE FI FO FUM! Hello, my beautiful wife...WAIT! Do I smell a human? YUCK! WHERE IS IT?"
“Buenas noches, mi querido esposo”, respondió la gigante. “No hay nadie aquí. Hueles el estofado de vegetales, nada más”.
“Bien”, gruñó el gigante. “Odio a los humanos”.
Se sentó a la mesa de la cocina.
"Good evening, my darling husband," replied the giantess. "There is nobody here. You smell the vegetable stew, nothing more."
"Good," grunted the giant. "I hate humans."
He sat down at the kitchen table.
El gigante sacó un pequeño saco de monedas de oro de su bolsillo y las contó. Una... dos... tres... cuatro... cinco monedas de oro.
Jack miraba desde dentro de la despensa. “¡Cinco monedas de oro!” pensó Jack. “Si tuviera ese dinero, ¡podría arreglar mi casa!”
The giant took a small sack of gold coins out of his pocket and counted them. One... two... three... four... five gold coins.
Jack watched from inside the pantry. "Five gold coins!" thought Jack. "If I had that money, I could fix our house!"
Cuando los dos gigantes salieron de la habitación, Jack se robó las cinco monedas de oro y las metió en su bolso.
“¡Esto es todo lo que necesito!” pensó Jack.
When both of the giants left the room, Jack stole the five gold coins and slipped them into his bag.
"This is all I need!" thought Jack.
Pero luego Jack recordó que la vaca de la familia ya no estaba. Sin una vaca, se morirían de hambre. Decidió quedarse y buscar otros tesoros.
But then Jack remembered the family cow was gone. Without a cow, they would starve. He decided to stay and look for other treasures.
Siguió al gigante a la sala y se escondió debajo del mueble. El gigante fue a la alacena y sacó una gallina de oro.
“Hola, mi bella gallina. ¡Pon un huevo, por favor!” dijo el gigante, y la gallina puso un huevo de oro.
He followed the giant into the living room and hid under the couch. The giant went to the cupboard and removed a golden hen.
“Hello, my beautiful hen. Lay an egg, please!" said the giant, and the hen laid a golden egg.
Jack vio desde debajo del mueble.
“¡Una gallina que pone huevos de oro!” susurró Jack. “¡Si tuviera esa gallina, podría comprar cincuenta vacas!”
Jack watched from under the couch.
"A hen that lays golden eggs!" whispered Jack. "If I had that hen, I could buy fifty cows!"
Cuando el gigante salió de la habitación, Jack salió de debajo del mueble. Fue a la alacena, tomó la gallina, y la puso en su bolso.
“Esto es todo lo que necesito...” pensó Jack.
When the giant left the room, Jack came out from under the couch. He went to the cupboard, took the hen, and put it in his bag.
"This is all I need… " thought Jack.
Pero luego Jack pensó en lo que el viejo había prometido. Jack pensó en ser más rico que el hombre más rico del mundo. Decidió ver qué otro tesoro podía encontrar.
But then Jack thought about what the old man had promised. Jack thought about being richer than the richest man in the world! He decided to see what other treasure he could find.
Siguió al gigante hacia su cuarto, y se escondió debajo de su cama. Había un arpa dorada apoyada en la esquina de la habitación.
“Hola, mi bella arpa. ¡Toca, por favor!” dijo el gigante. El arpa empezó a tocar música sin que nadie tocara las cuerdas.
He followed the giant into the bedroom, and hid under the bed. There was a golden harp standing in the corner of the room.
"Hello, my beautiful harp. Play, please!" said the giant. The harp began playing music with no one touching the strings.
“¡Guau! ¡Un arpa mágica!” susurró Jack. “¡Esa arpa me haría rico y famoso!”
Cuando el gigante se quedó dormido, Jack salió de debajo de la cama. Tomó el arpa mágica y la puso en su bolso.
"Wow! A magic harp!" whispered Jack. "That harp would make me rich and famous!"
When the giant-man fell asleep, Jack crawled out from under the bed. He took the magic harp and put it in his bag.
Pero esta vez Jack no fue tan afortunado.
El arpa mágica gritó: “¡Ayuda, amo! ¡Un humano me está robando!”
El gigante se despertó y vio a Jack con el arpa mágica, la gallina de oro, y sus monedas de oro.
But this time Jack was not so lucky.
The magic harp screamed, “Help, master! A human is stealing me!”
The giant woke up and saw Jack with the magic harp, the golden hen, and his gold coins.
"¡DETENTE, LADRÓN!”
El gigante persiguió a Jack, afuera del cuarto, por el pasillo, a través de la cocina, y hasta la puerta de la entrada.
"STOP, THIEF!"
The giant chased Jack — out of the bedroom, down the hallway, through the kitchen, and out the front door.
Pero Jack era más pequeño y más rápido que el gigante. Jack alcanzó la planta de frijoles primero y se deslizó hacia abajo, abajo, abajo. Llegó al suelo con todos sus tesoros.
But Jack was smaller and faster than the giant. Jack reached the beanstalk first and slid down, down, down. He arrived at the bottom (ground) with all his treasures.
El gigante llegó a la cima de la planta de frijoles y miró hacia abajo. Le tenía miedo a las alturas. Despacio, bajó, bajó, bajó.
“¡TEN CUIDADO, ESPOSO!” le gritó la gigante desde el castillo. “¡LOS HUMANOS PUEDEN SER PELIGROSOS!”
The giant reached the top of the beanstalk and looked down. He was afraid of heights. He slowly climbed down, down, down.
"BE CAREFUL, HUSBAND!" shouted the giantess from the castle. "HUMANS CAN BE DANGEROUS!"
Jack vio al gigante bajar de la planta de frijoles. Así que corrió dentro de su casa y cogió un hacha. Cortó la planta de frijoles. ¡Clac! ¡Clac! ¡Clac!
Jack saw the giant coming down the beanstalk. So he ran into his house and grabbed an axe. He chopped the beanstalk. Whack! Whack! Whack!
De pronto, la planta de frijoles se quebró. El gigante se desplomó desde el cielo. Cayó abajo, abajo, abajo y aterrizó muy lejos, al otro lado de las Montañas Nubladas. ¡Plom!
Suddenly, the beanstalk snapped. The giant came tumbling down from the sky. He fell down, down, down, and landed far away, on the other side of the Foggy Mountains. Thud!
Por un momento todo era silencio. Luego Jack escuchó un sonido extraño a lo lejos... “¡NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!”
Era el gigante. La planta de frijoles se había caído, y ahora no tenía manera de volver a su castillo en las nubes.
For a moment everything was silent. Then Jack heard a strange sound from far away.
"NOOOOOOOOOOO!"
It was the giant. The beanstalk had fallen, and now he had no way to get back up to his castle in the clouds.
El gigante gritó tan fuerte que remeció las nubes y las volvió grises. Entonces en algún lugar en el cielo, Jack escuchó a la Señora Gigante empezar a llorar. Sus lágrimas cayeron por las nubes como pequeñas gotas y empaparon la tierra.
The giant yelled so loudly that it shook the clouds and turned them gray. Then somewhere in the sky, Jack heard Mrs. Giant start to cry. Her tears fell through the clouds in tiny drops and soaked the earth.
Luego de eso, Jack y su mamá vivieron una vida muy cómoda. La gallina de oro convirtió a Jack en millonario. El arpa mágica lo hizo famoso. Jack se casó con una mujer rica y famosa y juntos tuvieron diez hijos.
Pero Jack nunca fue realmente feliz.
After that, Jack and his mother lived a very comfortable life. The golden hen made Jack a millionaire. The magic harp made him famous. Jack married a rich and famous woman and together they had ten children.
But Jack was never really happy.
Cada vez que el viento soplaba, Jack oía al gigante llamar a su esposa. Y cada vez que llovía, sentía las lágrimas de la esposa del gigante cayendo sobre él. Jack se sentía triste y culpable.
Every time the wind blew, Jack heard the giant calling for his wife. And every time it rained, he felt the tears of the giant's wife falling on him. Jack felt sad and guilty.
Un día, cuando Jack era muy viejo, decidió que ya no quería estar triste. Abrió una caja en la repisa de su chimenea y sacó un último frijol mágico marchito.
One day, when Jack was very old, he decided that he didn't want to be sad any more. He opened a box on his mantelpiece and pulled out one last shrivelled magic bean.
Si pudiera encontrar al gigante, podría hacer crecer otra planta de frijoles. Entonces el gigante podría subir de nuevo a su castillo en las nubes. Si pudiera encontrar al gigante, también podría disculparse por ser tan codicioso. Jack empacó un bolso y caminó hacia las Montañas Nubladas.
If he could find the giant, he could grow another beanstalk. Then the giant could climb back up to his castle in the clouds. If he could find the giant, he could also apologize for being so greedy. Jack packed a bag and walked into the Foggy Mountains.
¿Encontró Jack al gigante? ¿Hizo crecer una nueva planta de frijoles con el último frijol mágico? Nadie lo sabe. Pero la gente dice que, si escuchas detenidamente en una tormenta, puedes oír el ruido de dos gigantes bailando juntos en las nubes.
Did Jack find the giant? Did he grow a new beanstalk with the last magic bean? Nobody knows. But people say, if you listen closely during a thunderstorm, you can hear the rumbling sound of two giants dancing together in the clouds.
