Un día de verano, dos excursionistas van caminando por las colinas secas y marrones. Es un día caluroso y los dos están cansados y hambrientos.
One summer day, two hikers are walking through the dry brown hills. It is a hot day and both are tired and hungry.
De pronto, los excursionistas ven un árbol a lo lejos.
“¡Tengo mucha hambre!” dice uno de ellos. “¿Crees que ese es un árbol de manzanas? Quiero una manzana grande, roja y crujiente".
Suddenly, the hikers see a tree in the distance.
"I am so hungry!" says one of them. “Do you think that's an apple tree? I want a big, red, crisp apple.”
“¡Seguro que no! Ese, no es un árbol de manzanas”, dice el otro. “¡Ese es un árbol de peras! Las peras son mis favoritas. Quiero una pera, dulce, amarilla y jugosa”.
“Certainly not! That is not an apple tree”, says the other. “That's a pear tree! Pears are my favorite. I want a pear, sweet, yellow and juicy."
Pero cuando llegan al árbol, no es un árbol de manzanas ni un árbol de peras. De hecho, no hay frutas por ninguna parte.
“¡Caramba!, dice uno. “¡Es solo un roble aburrido!”
But when they get to the tree, it's not an apple tree, nor a pear tree. In fact, there's no fruit anywhere.
"Ah geez," says one. "It's just a boring oak tree!"
Justo entonces, el cielo se vuelve gris y empieza a llover. Los dos excursionistas corren debajo del roble para no mojarse. Llueve y llueve, pero el roble es como un gran paraguas. No se mojan.
Just then, the sky turns gray and it starts to rain. The two hikers run under the oak to stay dry (literally: not get wet). It rains and it rains, but the oak is like a big umbrella. They don't get wet.
Los excursionistas esperan debajo del roble a que pare la lluvia. El día se convierte en noche.
“Tengo frío”, dice uno. “Necesitamos encender una hoguera. ¡Ayúdame a encontrar leña!”
The hikers wait under the oak for the rain to stop. The day turns into night.
"I'm cold," says one. “We need to light a fire*. Help me find firewood!”
“una hoguera” is more of a bonfire than a campfire. The hiker must be pretty cold! A smaller campfire is "una fogata".
Afortunadamente, hay muchas ramas debajo del roble. Los excursionistas las recogen y hacen una buena fogata. Se sientan al lado de la fogata para calentarse.
Fortunately, there are many branches under the oak tree. The hikers pick them up and make a nice campfire. They sit beside the campfire to warm up.
“Estoy cansado”, dice uno de ellos. “Tenemos que dormir aquí esta noche. ¡Ayúdame a hacer una cama!”.
"I'm tired," says one of them. “We have to sleep here tonight. Help me make a bed!”
Los excursionistas hacen una cama con las hojas verdes y suaves del roble. Se acuestan entre las hojas y se duermen.
The hikers make a bed out of the soft green leaves of the oak. They lie down among the leaves and fall asleep.
Llueve y hace viento, pero los dos están cómodos, abrigados y secos — bajo el “aburrido” roble.
It's rainy and windy, but the two of them are comfortable, warm and dry — under the “boring” oak tree.
Moraleja: A veces lo que quieres no es necesariamente lo que necesitas.
Moral: Sometimes what you want is not necessarily what you need.
