Había una vez un emperador que tenía una barriga redonda, cejas pobladas y un bigote muy largo, pero era muy vanidoso. Sólo pensaba en él.
There was once an emperor who had a round belly, bushy eyebrows and a very long mustache, but he was very vain. He only thought about himself.
“¡Soy tan maravilloso!” decía. “¡Miren mis maravillosas cejas! ¡Miren mi excelente bigote! ¡Me veo estupendo!”
"I'm so wonderful!" He said. "Look at my wonderful eyebrows! Look at my excellent mustache! I look marvellous!"
Al emperador le encantaba vestirse con ropa elegante. Tenía cuatrocientas camisas elegantes, trescientos pantalones elegantes y mil pares de calcetines elegantes.
The emperor loved to dress in elegant clothes. He had four hundred elegant shirts, three hundred elegant trousers and a thousand pairs of elegant socks.
Al emperador también le encantaba decir palabras sofisticadas, como “cascarrabias”, “trastocar” y “empírico”.
He also loved to use sophisticated words, like ‘cantankerous’, ‘disrupt’, and ‘empirical’.
(No sabía lo que significaban estas palabras, pero le gustaba decirlas de todos modos. Le gustaba parecer inteligente).
“¡Soy tan inteligente!”, decía. “¡Soy un GENIO!”
(He did not know what these words meant, but he liked to say them anyway. He liked to look intelligent.)
"I'm so intelligent!" He said. "I am a GENIUS!"
Un día, un hombre llegó al palacio. Dijo que era un sastre. Dijo que podía hacer la ropa más elegante del mundo. (Pero en verdad este hombre era deshonesto. Ganaba dinero engañando a gente rica).
One day, a man arrived at the palace. He said he was a tailor. He said he could make the most elegant clothes in the world. (But this man was actually dishonest. He made money cheating rich people.)
El sastre le trajo al emperador diez maletas.
“Su majestuosísima e inteligentísima majestad”, dijo. “Todos saben que usted es el hombre más inteligente del mundo...
The tailor brought ten suitcases to the emperor.
"Your most majestic and most intelligent majesty," he said. "Everyone knows that you are the smartest man in the world...
... Y he creado unas prendas de ropa increíbles. Esta ropa es solo para personas inteligentes. De hecho, los tontos ni siquiera pueden verla”.

El sastre desvistió al emperador hasta que se quedó en calzoncillos. Sacó su cinta métrica de una maleta y midió sus brazos, piernas, hombros y alrededor de su barriga grande y redonda.
The tailor undressed the emperor until he was left in his underpants. He pulled his measuring tape out of a suitcase and measured his arms, legs, shoulders and around his big, round belly.
Luego buscó en otra maleta.
“No, esta es demasiado grande... No... esta es demasiado pequeña… ¡Ah! ¡Esta es perfecta!”
Then he looked in another suitcase.
"No, this one is too big ... No ... this one is too small ... Ah! This is perfect!"
El emperador jadeó. ¡No podía ver nada!
“¿No es maravillosa?”, dijo el sastre. “Y recuerde…¡solo las personas inteligentes podrán verla!”
The emperor gasped. He couldn't see anything!
"Isn't it wonderful?" said the tailor. "And remember ... only smart people can see it!"
El sastre buscó en su maleta otra vez. “¡Mire estos pantalones! ¿No son hermosos? ¡Y son completamente invisibles para los idiotas! ¡Y mire esta chaqueta! ¿Ve los colores? ¡Un completo bobo no verá nada!”
The tailor searched his suitcase again.
"Look at these trousers! Aren't they beautiful? And they are completely invisible to idiots! And look at this jacket! See the colors? A complete ninny won't see anything!"
“Oh, sí…¡muy...muy bonito!” tartamudeó el emperador. Pero estaba confundido. ¿Por qué no podía ver la ropa?

Pero el emperador no dijo nada.
El sastre simuló vestir al emperador con una camisa, unos pantalones, una chaqueta y unos zapatos invisibles.
But the emperor said nothing. The tailor pretended to dress the emperor in an invisible shirt, trousers, jacket and shoes.
El emperador se paró frente al espejo. Quería ver la ropa, pero todo lo que pudo ver fue su barriga grande y redonda y sus calzoncillos.
“No sé si es mi estilo…”, dijo el emperador. “Pero déjame pedir una segunda opinión”.
The emperor stood in front of the mirror. He wanted to see the clothes, but all he could see was his big round belly and his underpants.
"I do not know if it's my style ..." said the emperor. "But let me ask for a second opinion."
El emperador llamó a tres de sus amigos más inteligentes. Cuando entraron a la habitación, les dijo:

The emperor called three of his most intelligent friends. When they entered the room, he said:
"Friends! What do you think of these new clothes? Only smart people can see them. Fools cannot see anything!"

The emperor was excited. "I'll wear these new clothes at the parade tomorrow," he thought.
El emperador le dio al sastre muchísimo dinero. El sastre salió del palacio con diez maletas llenas de oro. Cuando estuvo a salvo en su carruaje, rio largo y tendido.
“¡Grandísimo tonto!”
The emperor gave the tailor a lot of money. The tailor left the palace with ten suitcases full of gold. When he was safe in his carriage, he laughed long and hard. "(What a) gigantic doofus!"
Esa noche, el emperador no durmió. Se quedó despierto hasta tarde leyendo los libros más grandes y pesados de su biblioteca.
That night, the emperor did not sleep. He stayed up late, reading the biggest and heaviest books in his library.
“Solo necesito algunas palabras sofisticadas más…. y después podré ver mi traje”, pensó.
"I just need some more sophisticated words ... and then I can see my suit," he thought.
A la mañana siguiente, dos sirvientes ingresaron a la habitación del emperador para vestirlo. Era el día del desfile. Por supuesto, no pudieron ver la ropa. Pero no dijeron nada. No querían parecer tontos.

El emperador se miró al espejo: entrecerró los ojos, movió su cabeza a la izquierda y a la derecha. Y... esperen… ¡ahí estaba!

... Out of the corner of his eye he thought he saw a light and shiny fabric. A checkered pattern. A tiny bit of color. He could see the clothes!

El emperador estaba contento de haber visto la ropa nueva.

The emperor was happy to have seen the new clothes.
"Let's go to the parade!" He exclaimed.

The whole town was at the parade. All the smart people were there: All the scientists. All the writers. All the teachers. All the children.

The emperor waved to the crowd from his carriage. But as the carriage began to move down the street, the crowd fell silent.The music stopped. Everyone stared at the emperor.

Pero entonces, un niño pequeño gritó desde la parte trasera de la multitud:

Corrió a su habitación y cerró la puerta de un golpe.
He jumped out of the carriage and ran back to the palace. Behind him he heard:
"UN-DER-PANTS! UN-DER-PANTS!"
He ran to his room and slammed the door shut.
Más tarde, cuando sus amigos lo encontraron, estaba acostado en la cama. Se había puesto toda su ropa de verdad: todas sus camisas elegantes, todos sus pantalones elegantes, y los mil pares de calcetines elegantes.
