Cuando el rey abrió la puerta a la mañana siguiente, no pudo creer lo que vio.
“¿CÓMO HAS HECHO?”, gritó. “¡DÍMELO! ¡AHORA!”
When the king opened the door the next morning, he could not believe what he saw.
"HOW DID YOU DO (THIS)?" he shouted. "TELL ME! NOW!"
Sofía se encogió de hombros. “Aprendí a tejer sola el invierno pasado…”
El rey condujo a Sofía a otra habitación del palacio. Esta habitación estaba llena de paja, desde el suelo hasta el techo.
Sofia shrugged (her shoulders). "I taught myself to knit (learned to knit alone) last winter..."
The king led Sofia to another room in the palace. This room was full of straw, from floor to ceiling.
“Aquí hay CIEN fardos de paja”, dijo el rey. “Y hay diez guardias afuera. Esta vez, nadie podrá ayudarte”.
"Here are ONE HUNDRED bundles of straw," said the king. "And there are ten guards outside. This time, nobody will be able to help you."
“Espero que no estés mintiendo, querida Sofía”, dijo el rey tranquilamente. “Recuerda, TODOS los mentirosos serán entregados a mis cocodrilos”.
Todos se fueron. Sofía estaba sola. Y había diez guardias del otro lado de la puerta.
"I hope you're not lying, dear Sofia," the king said quietly. "Remember, ALL liars will be fed (delivered) to my crocodiles..."
Everyone left. Sofia was alone. And there were ten guards on the other side of the door.
Nuevamente, Sofía supo qué hacer. Buscó al enano saltarín. Miró hacia arriba. Miró hacia abajo. Buscó debajo de la mesa. Buscó en el armario.
“¿Enano saltarín? ¿Enano saltarín?” susurró Sofía. “¿Dónde estás?”
Again, Sofia knew what to do. She searched for the jumping dwarf. She looked up. She looked down. She searched under the table. She searched in the closet.
"Jumping dwarf? Jumping dwarf?" whispered Sofia. "Where are you?"
Buscó y buscó, pero el enano saltarín no estaba. Sofía se sentó y lloró. Pronto se quedó dormida.
She searched and searched, but the jumping dwarf was not there. Sofia sat down and cried. Soon she fell asleep.
Cuando despertó, no podía creerlo. Toda la paja había desaparecido, y en el suelo había un GRAN montículo de ropa dorada. El enano saltarín estaba sentado sobre la ropa.
When she woke up, she could not believe it. All the straw had disappeared, and on the ground was a HUGE pile of golden clothes. The jumping dwarf was sitting on the clothes.
“Ay, ¡gracias!” dijo Sofía, emocionada. “Pensé que sería comida de cocodrilo. Estaba segura”.
El enano saltarín sonrió. “Y ahora, ¿qué tienes para mí?” preguntó.
"Oh, thank you!" said Sofia, excitedly. "I thought I would be crocodile food, for sure (I was sure)."
The jumping dwarf smiled. "And now, what do you have for me?" he asked.
“¿Este brazalete de zafiro?”, sugirió Sofía.
“No. No necesito un brazalete…”, dijo el enano saltarín.
"This sapphire bracelet?" suggested Sofia.
"No. I don't need a bracelet..." said the jumping dwarf.
“¿Estos pendientes de plata?” sugirió Sofía.
“No. No uso pendientes…”, dijo el enano saltarín.
"These silver earrings?" suggested Sofia.
"No. I don't wear earrings..." said the jumping dwarf.
Sofía se enfureció. “¡No tengo nada más para darte!”.
“Mmmm,ya sé lo que quiero”, dijo el enano saltarín. “Dentro de muchos años, dame a tu primer hijo”.
Sofia was furious. "I have nothing more to give you!"
"Hmmm, I know what I want," said the jumping dwarf. "In many years time, give me your first child."
“¿QUÉ? ¡NO!” gritó Sofía.
“O le diré al rey que eres una mentirosa...” susurró el enano saltarín.
A Sofía no le quedaba otra opción. Aceptó el trato con el enano saltarín.
"WHAT? NO!" shouted Sofia.
"Or I will tell the king that you're a liar..." whispered the jumping dwarf.
Sofia had no other choice. She accepted the deal with the jumping dwarf.
El rey regresó. Cuando abrió la puerta, se maravilló. Había un montón de ropa dorada, apilada desde el suelo hasta el techo.
The king returned. When he opened the door, he was amazed. There was a pile of gold clothes, stacked from floor to ceiling.
“De verdad eres increíble”, le dijo el rey a Sofía. “Puedes irte. Pero quizás, alguna vez, puedas enseñarme a tejer”.
Sofía aceptó. Luego salió del palacio tan rápido como pudo.
"Truly you are amazing," the king told Sofia. "You can go. But maybe, sometime, you can teach me how to knit?"
Sofia agreed. Then she ran out of the palace as fast as she could.
