Diez años después, Sofía se había convertido en una mujer inteligente y exitosa. Se había casado con un hombre amable y había tenido un hijo varón.
Ten years later, Sofia had become an intelligent and accomplished woman. She had married a kind man, and had a baby boy.
Una mañana, estaba jugando con su hijo en el jardín cuando escuchó esa extraña risita.
“¡Ji, ji, ji! ¿Qué tienes para mí?” El enano saltarín saltaba detrás de un arbusto.
One morning, she was playing with her son in the garden when she heard that strange giggle.
"Hee hee hee! What do you have for me?" The jumping dwarf jumped out from behind a bush.
“¡NO! ¡NO PUEDES LLEVÁRTELO!” gritó Sofía. Abrazó al bebé contra su pecho y se puso a llorar.
"NO! YOU CAN'T TAKE HIM!" Sofia shouted. She hugged the baby against her chest and began to cry.
“Hicimos un trato, querida”, dijo el enano saltarín. “Pero te propongo otro trato: ¡adivina mi nombre! Si lo dices, puedes quedarte con tu hijo. Tienes tres días. ¿Trato hecho?”
Sofía contestó: “Trato hecho”.
"We made a deal, dear," said the jumping dwarf. "But I propose another deal: guess my name! If you can say it, you can keep (stay with) your son. You have three days. Is it a deal? (deal done?)"
Sofia answered: "It's a deal"
Esa noche, el enano saltarín regresó, y Sofía intentó adivinar con nombres comunes.
“¿Es Esteban?”
“No”.
“¿Pablo?”
“No”.
“¿Juan?”
“No”.
That night, the jumping dwarf returned, and Sofia tried to guess (with) common names.
"Is it Esteban?"
"No".
"Pablo?"
"No".
"Juan?"
"No".
La segunda noche, Sofía intentó con nombres menos comunes.
“¿Te llamas Baltazar?”
“No”.
“¿Fernando?”
“No”.
“¿Alfonso?”
“No”.
The second night, Sofia tried (with) less common names.
"Is your name Baltazar?"
"No".
"Fernando?"
"No".
"Alfonso?"
"No".
El tercer día, Sofía se desesperó. Dio un paseo por el bosque. Se estaba haciendo tarde.
The third day, Sofia was desperate. She took a walk in the woods. It was getting late.
“Sus pies son puntiagudos como los de un noruego...” pensó. “¿Así que tal vez su nombre sea Bjørn? Pero su nariz es roja como la de un australiano… ¿quizás su nombre sea Keith? ¡Pero su sombrero parece turco! ¿Y si se llama Mustafa?”
"His feet a pointy like a Norwegian..." she thought. "So maybe his name is Bjørn? But his nose is red like an Australian's ... maybe his name is Keith? But his hat looks Turkish! What if he's called Mustafa?"
Sofía se adentró más y más en el bosque. Saltó unos troncos y trepó unas rocas, y luego dobló en una esquina. Se sorprendió mucho al ver una pequeña casa.
Sofia went deeper and deeper (deeper, more and more) into the forest. She jumped some logs and climbed (over) some rocks, and then turned a corner. She was very surprised to see a small house.
Una mujer estaba sentada en la entrada. Tejía ropa para bebés y cantaba suavemente. En su cuello tenía el collar de Sofía. En su dedo tenía el anillo de Sofía.
A woman was sitting on the porch. She knitted baby clothes and sang softly. On her neck was Sofia's necklace. On her finger was Sofia's ring.
“¡Rumpelstiltskin! ¡Rumpelstiltskin, mi amor! ¿Puedes venir?” llamó la mujer. “¡Necesito que me ayudes a tejer!”
¿Y adivina quién apareció en la puerta? ¡El enano saltarín!
"Rumpelstiltskin! Rumpelstiltskin, my love! Can you come (here)?" The woman called out. "I need you to help me knit!"
And guess who appeared at the door? The jumping dwarf!
Sofía se escondió detrás de un arbusto. ¡Qué suerte! Corrió a su casa tan rápido como pudo.
Sofia hid behind a bush. How lucky! She ran home as fast as she could.
Esa noche, el enano saltarín visitó a Sofía. Parecía muy contento.
“Es la hora, querida”, dijo. “Entonces, ¿cuál es mi nombre?”
That night, the jumping dwarf visited Sofia. He seemed very happy.
"It's time, my dear," he said. "So, what is my name?"
“¿Es... Ruibarbo?”
“No”.
“¿Es... Remolacha?”
“No”.
“¿Es….....Rumpelstiltskin?”
"Is it Rhubarb?"
"No."
"Is it Beetroot?"
"No."
"Is it... Rumpelstiltskin?"
El enano saltarín se puso rojo de la furia.
“¡GRRRRRRRRRRRR!”.
Chilló y gritó y golpeó con los zapatos.
“¿Cómo sabes mi nombre? ¿CÓMO SABES MI NOMBRE?”
The jumping dwarf turned red with anger.
"GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!"
He shrieked and screamed and stomped his feet (banged with his shoes).
"How do you know my name? HOW DO YOU KNOW MY NAME?"
Pero luego se detuvo y lloró. Miró a Sofía:
“Hubiéramos querido mucho a tu hijo”, susurró.
El enano saltarín se secó las lágrimas con un pañuelo amarillo y desapareció.
But then he stopped and cried. He looked at Sofia.
"We would have loved your son very much," he whispered.
The jumping dwarf wiped his tears with a yellow handkerchief and disappeared.
Después de eso, Sofía y su familia vivieron felices para siempre, justo como en los cuentos. ¿Pero qué le ocurrió a Rumpelstiltskin?
After that, Sofia and her family lived happily ever after (happy for always), just like in the stories. But what happened to Rumpelstiltskin?
Bueno, presta atención cuando escuches a la gente diciendo mentiras. Porque siempre hay que pagar por ellas.
Well, pay attention when you hear people telling lies. Because you always have to pay for them.
Seguramente Rumpelstiltskin estará ahí. Debajo de la mesa, o arriba de la alacena. Siempre está esperando para hacer un buen trato.
Rumpelstiltskin will surely be there. Under the table, or on top of the cupboard. He is always waiting to make a good deal.
