Das ist eine Stadtmaus. Sie wohnt in der Großstadt mit ihren vielen hohen Häusern, Geschäften und Restaurants. Aber heute besucht sie ihre Freundin, eine Landmaus.
This is a city mouse. She lives in a big city with its many tall buildings, shops and restaurants. But today she is visiting her friend, a country mouse.
Die Landmaus wohnt in einem kuscheligen Nest unter einem Baum. Ihr Zuhause ist klein, aber es ist warm und gemütlich.
The country mouse lives in a cozy nest under a tree. Her home is small, but it is warm and comfortable.
Die Landmaus kocht ein Abendessen mit Sachen aus ihrem Garten: Mais, Karotten, Eicheln, und dazu ein kühles Glas Wasser aus dem Bach. Inzwischen redet und redet die Stadtmaus nur:
The country mouse cooks a dinner with food from her garden: corn, carrots, acorns, and (in addition) a cool glass of water from the stream. Meanwhile, the city mouse just talks and talks:
„Die Stadt ist großartig! Ich gehe ins Theater und ins Museum! Mein Haus hat ZWANZIG Zimmer! Du MUSST mich unbedingt mal besuchen! Hast du schon einmal chinesisches Essen probiert?
“The city is great! I go to the theatre and the museum. My house has TWENTY rooms. You absolutely MUST visit me! Have you tried Chinese food before?”
In dieser Nacht träumt die Landmaus, dass sie in der Stadt wohnt. Sie träumt, dass sie in schicken Restaurants isst, dabei über schicke Dinge redet, und schicke Hüte aus schicken Läden trägt. Sie träumt davon, chinesisches Essen zu essen.
„Wie wundervoll!“, denkt sie. „Ich will auch in der Stadt leben!“
That night, the country mouse dreams that she lives in the city. She dreams that she is eating in fancy restaurants, talking about fancy things, and wearing fancy hats from fancy shops. She dreams of eating Chinese food.
“How wonderful!” she thinks. “I want to live in the city too!”
Am Morgen stimmt die Landmaus zu, die Stadtmaus zu besuchen. Sie packt ihren Koffer und folgt der Stadtmaus zurück in ihr großes Haus in der Stadt.
In the morning the country mouse agrees to visit the city mouse. She packs her suitcase and follows the city mouse back to her big house in the city.
Das Haus ist riesig! Es gibt zwanzig Zimmer voller schöner Möbel. Die Landmaus ist baff.
„Welches Zimmer ist meins?“, fragt sie.
The house is huge! There are twenty rooms full of beautiful furniture. The country mouse is flabbergasted.
“Which room is mine?” she asks.
„Ähm… wir wohnen eigentlich hier unten…“, antwortet die Stadtmaus. Sie führt die Landmaus die Treppe hinunter in den Keller. In der Dunkelheit erkennt die Landmaus viele andere Mäusefamilien.
„Das sind meine Mitbewohner…“, erklärt die Stadtmaus.
“Um... we actually live down here…” replies the city mouse. She leads the country mouse down the stairs to the cellar. In the darkness, the country mouse sees many other mouse families.
“These are my housemates…” explains the city mouse.
Zum Abendessen führt die Stadtmaus die Landmaus zurück hinauf. Im Esszimmer gibt es ein Festessen mit vielen Leckereien auf dem Tisch: Käse und Speck, Plätzchen und Torten und Limonade. Und chinesische Nudeln!
For dinner, the city mouse leads the country mouse back upstairs. In the dining room there is a feast with lots of goodies on the table: cheese and bacon, cookies, cakes, and lemonade. And Chinese noodles!
Aber gerade, als sie zu essen anfangen wollen – SCHEPPER! Ein Ungeheuer mit spitzen Zähnen und scharfen Krallen springt auf den Tisch! Es ist die Katze!
But just as they are about to start eating ... CRASH! A monster with sharp teeth and sharp claws jumps up on the table. It’s the cat!
Sie jagt die beiden Mäuse vom Tisch und quer über das Parkett. Die Mäuse verstecken sich schnell in einem Loch in der Wand. Sackgasse!
She chases the two mice off the table and across the parquet (floor). The mice quickly hide in a hole in the wall. Dead end!
Sie warten still, bis die Katze weg ist. Dann huschen sie zurück ins Esszimmer, aber all das Essen ist auch weg! Die Stadtmenschen haben alles gegessen!
They wait silently until the cat is gone. Then, they scurry back to the dining room, but all the food is gone too! The city humans ate everything!
Die Landmaus rennt zurück in den Keller und packt ihren Koffer.
„Wo willst du hin?“, fragt die Stadtmaus.
The country mouse runs back to the cellar and packs her suitcase.
“Where are you going?” asks the city mouse.
„Nach Hause!“, sagt die Landmaus. „Ich will zurück aufs Land! Dein Stadtleben ist doch nicht so großartig. Jetzt hilf mir bitte, ein Taxi zu rufen.“
“Home”, says the country mouse. “I want to go back to the country. Your city life isn't so great. Now, please help me to call a taxi.”
Moral: Manchmal ist das Leben anderer gar nicht so großartig, wie sie vielleicht vorgeben.
Moral: Sometimes other people’s lives are not as great as they say.
