Un día, mientras Cenicienta estaba en el jardín recogiendo zapallos, llegó una carta a la casa. Era una invitación al baile de verano del rey. La madrastra y las hermanastras de Cenicienta estaban muy entusiasmadas.
One day, while Cinderella was in the garden picking pumpkins, a letter arrived at the house. It was an invitation to the king's summer ball. Cinderella's stepmother and stepsisters were very excited.
“¡El príncipe estará allí!”
“¡Él es muy guapo!”
“¡Él es muy rico!”
“¡Él necesita una esposa...”
"The prince will be there!"
"He is so handsome!"
"He is so rich!"
"He needs a wife..."
Las hermanastras pasaron semanas preparándose para el baile. Compraron vestidos nuevos, zapatos nuevos y bolsos nuevos. El día del baile, Cenicienta les ayudó a ponerse sus vestidos y a arreglarse su cabello.
The stepsisters spent weeks preparing for the ball. They bought new dresses, new shoes, and new handbags. On the day of the ball, Cinderella helped them put on their dresses and do their hair.
“¡Oh, tengo una magnífica idea!” exclamó la hermanastra menor. “¡Cenicienta, ven al baile con nosotras! ¡Será más divertido si tú estás allí!”
"Oh, I have a wonderful idea!" exclaimed the youngest stepsister. "Cinderella, come to the ball with us! It will be more fun if you are there!"
“Oh, pero no tienes nada que ponerte…” rio la hermanastra mayor. “No puedes conocer al príncipe llevando puesta esa ropa sucia y vieja. ¡Qué lástima! Quizá la próxima vez”.
"Oh, but you don't have anything to wear… (lit: put on)" laughed the oldest stepsister. "You can’t meet the prince in those dirty old clothes. What a shame. Maybe next time.”
Cenicienta intentó no llorar. Terminó de vestir a sus hermanas y, luego, bajó a la cocina. Se sentó al lado del fuego y suspiró.
“Un día mejorarán las cosas”, le dijo ella al gato.
“Miau…” respondió el gato.
Cinderella tried not to cry. She finished dressing her sisters and then went down to the kitchen. She sat beside the fire and sighed.
"One day things will get better," she told the cat.
"Meow…" the cat replied.
Justo entonces, hubo un destello de luz, y una anciana apareció en el rincón de la cocina.
“¿Quién…quién es usted?” tartamudeó Cenicienta.
“Soy tu hada madrina”, dijo la anciana. “Tú eres huérfana, y todos los huérfanos tienen hadas madrinas”.
Just then, there was flash of light, and an old woman appeared in a corner of the kitchen.
"Who… who are you?" stammered Cinderella.
"I am your fairy godmother” said the old woman. "You are an orphan, and all orphans have a fairy godmother."
El hada madrina acarició al gato.
“Este gato me cuenta lo amable que eres. Y cómo siempre deseas que las cosas mejoren algún día. Hoy es ese día, Cenicienta. Vas a ir al baile del rey. ¡Tráeme un zapallo!”
The fairy godmother patted the cat.
"This cat tells me how kind you are. And how you always wish for things to get better some day. Today is that day, Cinderella. You are going to the king's ball. Fetch me a pumpkin!"
Cenicienta corrió al jardín y cogió un gran zapallo de color naranja. El hada madrina tocó el zapallo con su varita mágica y se convirtió en una carroza de oro.
Cinderella ran into the garden and picked a big, orange pumpkin. The fairy godmother touched the pumpkin with her magic wand and it turned into a golden carriage.
“¡Vengan acá, ratoncitos!” les dijo a los ratones de la pared. De nuevo, hizo un movimiento con su varita y los ratones se convirtieron en seis hermosos caballos para jalar de la carroza.
"Come here, little mice!" she said to the mice in the wall. Again, she waved her wand (made a movement with her wand), and the mice turned into six beautiful horses to pull the carriage.
“¡Pero no tengo vestido!” dijo Cenicienta.
“Quédate quieta”, dijo el hada madrina. De nuevo hizo un movimiento con la varita y las prendas sucias de Cenicienta se convirtieron en un vestido plateado espectacular. Y dos bellos zapatos de cristal aparecieron en los pies de Cenicienta.
"But I don't have a dress!" said Cinderella.
"Stand still," said the fairy godmother. Again, she waved her wand (made a movement with her wand), and Cinderella's dirty clothes turned into a spectacular silver dress. And two beautiful glass shoes appeared on Cinderella's feet.
“Ahora, ¡ve al baile!” dijo el hada madrina. “¡Pero debes estar en casa a la medianoche! Cuando el reloj marque las doce, tu vestido se convertirá de nuevo en harapos y tu carroza se convertirá de nuevo en un zapallo. ¡Diviértete!”
"Now go to the ball!" said the fairy godmother. "But you must be home by midnight! When the clock strikes (marks) twelve, your dress will turn into rags again, and your carriage will turn into a pumpkin again.
... Have fun!"
Y con otro destello de luz, el hada madrina desapareció.
“¡Voy a ir al baile!” dijo Cenicienta.
“Miau…” dijo el gato.
And with another flash of light, the fairy godmother disappeared.
"I'm going to the ball!" said Cinderella.
"Meow…" said the cat.
