Una mañana muy temprano, un zorro está caminando por el bosque. Él tiene hambre y está buscando algo para comer. Ve un cuervo sentado en la rama más alta de un árbol. El cuervo tiene un pedazo de queso en el pico.
Early one morning, a fox is walking through the woods. He is hungry, and he is looking for something to eat. He sees a crow sitting on the highest branch of a tree. The crow has a piece of cheese in his beak.
“¡Qué rico! ¡Me encanta el queso!” piensa el zorro. “Encontré mi desayuno! Pero, ¿cómo puedo conseguirlo?”
Piensa y piensa. Entonces, se le ocurre una estupenda idea. “¡Haré al cuervo hablar!”
“Yum! I love cheese!" thinks the fox. "I have found my breakfast! But how can I get it?"
He thinks and he thinks. Then he has a clever idea. "I will make that crow talk!"
Se sienta en la parte inferior del árbol y mira al cuervo.
“¡Buenos días, Señor Cuervo!" dice. "¿No es un día maravilloso?"
El cuervo mira al zorro y no dice nada.
He sits at the bottom of the tree and looks up at the crow.
“Good morning, Mr Crow!” he says. "Isn't it a lovely day?"
The crow looks at the fox and says nothing.
“¡Dije buenos días!”, dice el zorro. “¿Me escuchó? Tal vez usted no puede escucharme allá arriba...”
El cuervo sospecha. Él sujeta fuertemente el queso con su pico y no dice nada.
“Mmm. Es difícil”, piensa el zorro. Pero no se da por vencido. Le sonríe al cuervo.
"I said good morning!” says the fox. “Do you hear me? Maybe you can’t hear me up there...”
The crow is suspicious. He holds the cheese tightly in his beak and says nothing.
"Hmm. This is difficult," thinks the fox. But he is not defeated. He smiles at the crow.
“Sabe, usted es realmente el pájaro más hermoso”, dice. “Sus plumas son tan relucientes. Sus ojos son tan brillantes. Su pico es tan… emm… puntiagudo. Todo en usted es perfecto”.
Aún así, el cuervo no dice nada.
“You know, you really are the most handsome bird,” he says. “Your feathers are so shiny. Your eyes are so bright. Your beak is so…umm… pointy. Everything about you is perfect.”
Still, the crow says nothing.
Entonces dice el zorro: “Señor Cuervo, ¿es su voz tan magnífica como usted? He escuchado que usted tiene la voz más maravillosa. Por favor, cánteme. Entonces le diré a todos que usted es el pájaro más increíble - ¡el rey de todos los pájaros!”
So the fox says: “Mr Crow, is your voice as magnificent as you are? I have heard that you have the most wonderful voice. Please sing to me. Then I will tell everyone you are the most incredible bird — the king of all birds!”
Esto hace sentir bien al cuervo. Él quiere que todos sepan que tiene la voz más maravillosa. Él quiere que todos sepan que él es el rey de todos los pájaros.
This makes the crow feel good. He wants everyone to know he has the most wonderful voice. He wants everyone to know he is the king of the birds.
Él sonríe un poco. Luego, sonríe más. Entonces abre su boca y le canta al zorro su mejor canción. Y… ¡plaf! El queso cae de su pico derecho a la boca del zorro. Se lo traga.
He smiles a little. Then he smiles more. Then he opens his mouth to sing his best song to the fox. And… plop! The cheese falls from his beak straight into the fox's mouth. He swallows it.
“Mmmmm. ¡Gracias por el delicioso desayuno, Señor Cuervo!” el zorro se ríe mientras se va. “¡Que tenga un hermoso día!”
"Mmmmm. Thank you for the delicious breakfast, Mr Crow!" laughs the fox as he walks away. "Have a lovely day!”
(* Note: Usually in Spanish the adjective goes after the noun. But here the adjectives (delicioso, hermoso) have gone in front of the nouns (desayuno, día) for extra emphasis.)
Moraleja: Cuidado con los aduladores. Ellos usualmente quieren algo de ti.
Moral: Beware of flatterers. They usually want something from you.
